Hands #7-11: The Melogno and Hoffman Show

Level 26 : 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante
Pablo Melogno
Pablo Melogno

Hand #7: It folded to small blind Pablo Melogno, who was considering his options when the fire alarm sounded and a loud recorded message said that they were looking into it. He waited until that was over (although the white lights are still pulsing after hand 11) and raised to 110,000, picking up Truyen Nguyen's big blind.

Hand #8: Melogno raised to 80,000 on the button, and took more blinds.

Hand #9: Wilbern Hoffman opened for 110,000 from early position, was three-bet by cutoff Melogno to 190,000, and made the call. Hoffman led out for 300,000 on the {j-Hearts}{3-Spades}{8-Hearts}. Melogno raised to 735,000 and received a swift fold and the pot.

Hand #10: Hoffman limped in under the gun, and saw a {2-Spades}{k-Hearts}{6-Spades} flop with Ben Keeline and David Baker in the blinds. Hoffman bet 150,000 when it was checked to him, and that won him the pot.

Hand #11: Melogno raised preflop once again, this time to 115,000, picking up Hoffman in the big blind as a caller. He bet the {3-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{3-Clubs} flop when Hoffman checked and won it right there.

Hands #4-6: Two Big Folds from Engel

Level 26 : 25,000/50,000, 50,000 ante

Hand #4: Pablo Melogno raised to 110,000 in early position and picked up the blinds and ante.

Hand #5: Ari Engel opened to 125,000 in middle position and Ben Keeline three-bet shoved all in for 1,685,000 on his left. The action folded back to Engel who asked for a count before dipping into the tank. It was over five minutes later and Engel still had a puzzled look on his face. He eventually laid his hand down and Keeline scooped the pot.

Hand #6: Engel made it 110,000 to go this time and Melogno defended from the big blind. The flop fell {4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades} and Melogno led out for 80,000. Engel called and the {5-Diamonds} landed on the turn.

Melogno stuck in another bet of 165,000 and Engel still called. The river was the {4-Diamonds} and Melogno sized up a bet of 685,000. Engel thought for a couple of minutes again and sent his cards to the muck once more.

Harald Sammer Eliminated in 10th place ($23,828)

Level 25 : 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante
Harald Sammer
Harald Sammer

Harald Sammer has popped the final table bubble by busting in 10th in a gargantuan three-way pot vs. Ari Engel and Wilbern Hoffman. Preflop, Hoffman opened for 100,000 and Sammer shoved for 990,000. Engel asked for a count, then announced that he too was all in. Back to Hoffman, who snap-called too.

Sammer: {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Hoffman: {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}
Engel: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} (putting both of the near evenly stacked shorter players at risk)

When the flop of {7-Clubs}{q-Spades}{10-Diamonds} brought two pair for Sammer, Hoffman, standing, uttered a short Anglo-Saxon expletive. The turn was the innocuous {9-Spades} but the river paired the seven with the {7-Hearts}.

"Aces, you won," it was pointed out to Hoffman who was still in the thrall of the flop suckout. He bent double, then picked himself, and his large new stack, up.

Nguyen Barrels Three Streets

Level 25 : 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante

Harald Sammer limped in on the button which invited Ari Engel and Truyen Nguyen to come along from the blinds. The flop fell {j-Spades}{10-Hearts}{3-Clubs} and Engel checked to Nguyen who bet 80,000. Sammer folded and Engel called.

The turn was the {q-Clubs} and Engel check-called another bet of 135,000 from Nguyen. The river brought the {6-Diamonds} and Engel checked again. Nguyen slid out another bet of 250,000 and Engel instantly folded.

Engel Keeps Building

Level 25 : 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante
Ari Engel
Ari Engel

Ari Engel is pulling away from the ten-handed field, with over a million chips more than the next-highest stacked player Pablo Melogno. His most recent chunk of change came courtesy of Ryan Olisar, who played a pot out of position that took a turn for the serious on the river. Both players having checked the turn, the board lay {10-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}. Olisar checked and Engel bet 180,000. This represented just under a quarter of Olisar's remaining chips, and he thought for a while before making the call. Engel showed {10-Hearts}{6-Clubs} for two pair, the board's nine kicker. Olisar mucked his hand.

Arieh Doesn't Have to Show

Level 25 : 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante

The action folded to Josh Arieh in the small blind who just limped in. Pablo Melogno checked his option in the big blind and the flop came {k-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}. Both players checked and the {k-Spades} paired the board on the turn.

Arieh led out for 50,000 and Melogno called to see the {4-Clubs} on the river. Arieh checked this time and Melogno fired out a bet of 100,000. Arieh called and Melogno just pitched his cards to the muck, conceding the pot to Arieh.

Hughes Doubles Again

Level 25 : 20,000/40,000, 40,000 ante

Shortly after his reprieve from the felt, Hughes, who as the shortest player on either table is taking a fair while with his decisions (the floor is now hovering to make sure there's no stalling five-handed), took the plunge under the gun plus one for 440,000. It folded to big blind Josh Arieh, who snapped him off, finding himself in great shape preflop:

Arieh: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Hughes: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

Hughes was on his feet for the {8-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{5-Clubs} flop, but when the {q-Spades} arrived on the turn and the {5-Hearts} the river he retook his seat.

"That took you three minutes to move in with that hand?" asked a rankled Arieh, more for the time issues than the beat.

"It's a lot of money, someone might bust..." replied Hughes. The dust settled and they returned to play.
