Former NFL Tight End Eric Stocz Tackles the Main Event for the Fourth Time

Poker, especially the World Series of Poker, brings together people from all different walks of life. There's professional players and amateurs, celebrities and athletes, men and women — all of whom love the game, some for competition, some for fun, and some for both.

One such athlete that has returned to play the WSOP Main Event this year is Eric Stocz, former professional football player.

Born in 1974 in Ohio, Stocz was drafted as a tight end by the NFL's Detroit Lions in 1996. He played with them for three years before leaving the game and seeking out other interests to occupy his time. One of those interests turned out to be poker, and he has built up $193,238 in live tournament earnings.

After scoring his first live cash in 2008 at a Heartland Poker Tour event, Stocz went on to win the HPT $1,500 Main Event in Mount Pleasant for more than $117,000 in May of 2010. Since that win, he's added several in-the-money finishes to his résumé, including a 2011 WSOP Main Event run that saw him cash for $30,974.

Stocz is playing the Main Event for the fourth time this year and has already worked his way up to about 50,000 in chips.

One For Peters

Level 3 : 150/300, 0 ante

Maria Ho raised from early position, the player in the hijack called and David Peters called in the cutoff.

The flop fell {A-Spades}{4-Clubs}{2-Clubs} and Ho continued for 950. The player in the hijack called, Peters raised to 2,750, Ho folded and the player in the hijack called to see the {K-Clubs} turn, which both players checked. The {10-Diamonds} river completed the board and the player in the hijack check-called 5,600 from Peters who showed {4-Diamonds}{4-Spades} for a set of fours, winning the pot and upping his stack to about 32,000.

Small One For Jaka

Level 3 : 150/300, 0 ante

An early positioned player limped and Faraz Jaka followed suit from the cutoff. The small blind completed, big blind checked, and all four players prepped themselves for a flop.

The dealer fanned {9-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} on the felt and there were three checks over to Jaka. He fired at the pot for 700 and the small blind quickly tossed out a call. The big blind and the original limper folded, leaving Jaka and the small blind heads up to the turn.

The turn was the {10-Diamonds} and action once again checked to Jaka. He checked it back and the {7-Hearts} hit the river. Two more checks allowed Jaka to roll over a winning {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for a pair of tens. He took down the pot and now has about 18,000 in chips.

Smith Takes a Hit

Level 3 : 150/300, 0 ante

With 3,400 already in the pot and a completed board reading {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}, Dan Smith fired 1,000 into the middle. His lone opponent came over the top for 3,000 total, sending Smith into the tank.

After about 30 seconds passed, he shook his head and flung forward a call. His opponent showed {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} for a full house of queens full of aces. Smith mucked his hand and watched as the chips were pushed to the other end of the table. His stack now sits at 12,100.

A Set for Black

Level 3 : 150/300, 0 ante

Andy Black, one of the biggest characters at the 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event final table, just managed to rake in a decent-sized pot.

The board read {9-Clubs}{5-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{4-Spades}{2-Clubs} and with 3,600 chips in the pot, Weinman had, presumably, checked to Black. Black had 3,000 out in front of him and Weinman tanked for a long time before he called.

Black tabled {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds} for flopped set and Weinman mucked immediately.

"That could've gotten ugly," Weinman said.

"What did you have?" Black responded.

"A queen," Weinman said, as Black thought he could have earned a bit more off this hand.

Frankland All In

Level 3 : 150/300, 0 ante

Mathew Frankland doesn’t appear to be having the best start to the Main Event. His chip stack has mostly taken a downward trajectory without seeming to be involved in many hands. He did play one recently, though, that saw all of his chips in the middle.

Frankland called a 700 raise and one other player came along in late position. The flop was {k-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} and it was checked to the late position caller who bet 2,000. Frankland and the other player called to see the turn card fall the {5-Clubs}. It was checked again and the player in late position bet 5,000. It folded to Frankland who moved all in for not much more and was shrug-called.

Frankland had {k-Spades}{10-Spades} and he split the pot against his opponents {k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}. A few paltry chips went to Frankland's stack.

Grospellier Grounded

Level 3 : 150/300, 0 ante
Bertrand Grospellier at an earlier event
Bertrand Grospellier at an earlier event

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier is one of the best tournament players in the world, but even the great Frenchman sometimes struggles to overcome the variance of tournament poker.

We noticed Grospellier's seat was open and asked what had happened. Grospellier had raised with {A-}{K-} over the top of a raise and a couple of callers, then the chips went flying into the middle on an {A-}{K-}{9-} flop, only for Grospellier's opponent to show {9-}{9-}. No helped arrived for Grospellier on the turn or river and he busted out before the dinner break.
