Busquet Raises the River

Olivier Busquet (Day 1a)
Olivier Busquet (Day 1a)

When we arrived at Table 413, Dan Fleyshman had a bet of 13,000 sitting in front of him on the river of a {8-Hearts}{6-Spades}{3-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{2-Spades} board. His opponent, Olivier Busquet, opted to raise, making it 46,500 to go. Fleyshman asked for an amount, then shifted in his seat.

Arms crossed, Fleyshman studied Busquet, who stared down at a spot on the felt. Finally, Fleyshman flung forward a few orange T5,000 chips, and Busquet ripped over {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}.

"What's that?" Fleyshman asked, as the two were at opposite ends of the table.

"Straight," Busquet announced, just loud enough for Fleyshman to hear.

Fleyshman frowned at the bad news, and the dealer pulled his hand into the muck.

Cates Rivers The Wheel

Daniel Cates raised it up to 1,500 in the cutoff, and the player on the button made the call. The flop came {k-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}, and Cates fired out the same bet, 1,500. His opponent called, and the {2-Spades} hit the turn. Cates bet out again, this time for 5,000, and again he was call. The {4-Diamonds} hit the river, and Cates kept his foot on the gas with a bet of 11,500.

His opponent snap called him, and Cates tabled {a-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} for a straight. His opponent mucked, and Cates took down the pot to up his stack to over 220,000.

Aggressive Hennigan Forces Fold

After a player raised to 1,300 and Tony Tran called, John Hennigan raised to 4,600. The initial raiser folded, but Tran called. The dealer then spread {4-Spades}{7-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} on the flop, and Tran led out for 6,000. Hennigan quickly raised to 15,000, and Tran went into the tank. After about a minute, he decided to fold, and "Johnny World" Hennigan took the pot. He's now up to 59,000.

DeWitt Takes a DeHit

From the cutoff seat, Steve Buckner raised to 1,700. Gold bracelet winner Jason DeWitt called from the big blind, and the flop came down {Q-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}. Both players checked.

The turn was the {Q-Diamonds}, and DeWitt led with a bet of 2,000. Buckner called. The river was the {J-Diamonds}, and both players checked.

Buckner showed the {K-Clubs}{J-Spades} for two pair, and DeWitt mucked his hand.

Merson Remaining Active

Greg Merson
Greg Merson

Defending WSOP Main Event champion remains active here in Level 7, his frequent, aggressive play contrasting sharply with his relaxed seeming pose as he leans forward to continue receiving a lengthy message.

Just now he was calling an opponent's raise to 1,500 with position, then calling another bet of 2,000 following an {8-Clubs}{5-Spades}{7-Clubs} flop. The turn was the {6-Hearts}, and this time Merson's opponent checked and he fired a bet of 3,200 that earned a call.

Both players checked the {2-Clubs} river, and when Merson saw his opponent table {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} for a set of fives, he mucked.

The very next hand Merson was raising to 1,500 from the cutoff seat and his neighbor on the left called from the button. Merson continued for 2,200 on the {8-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} and his opponent stuck around. Then after both checked the {10-Hearts} turn, the river brought the {J-Diamonds} and a bet of 3,500 from Merson, and his opponent folded.

Pollak Shoves and Wins

On a {6-Spades}{8-Clubs}{4-Spades} flop and roughly 4,000 in the middle, we found a player betting 2,500 from the hi-jack with a caller from the small blind before Kevin Pollak moved all in for roughly 27,000.

The flop aggressor spent over a minute deliberating before eventually folding, while the small blind kicked his cards to the muck to see Pollak pushed the pot to move to roughly 38,000.

"Kevin Pollak ladies and gentleman!" announced one player on the table.

Josephy Jams the Turn

Seeing players standing up around Table 9, we moved over there and found Cliff "JohnnyBax" Josephy with a stack of orange chips in front of him, enough to put his opponent, Jonathan Green, all in on the turn. The board had paired at that point and now read {10-Spades}{6-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}, and Green had about 30,000 left. The pot was around 40,000.

"Show me a bluff one time," Green said, showing {9-}{9-} and folding.

"I would have showed you if you showed me a good hand, like queens," Josephy replied.

Green busted in a hand we didn't catch shortly thereafter.
