Stud-8 Does in the 2005 WSOP Main Event Champ

Level 17
Joe Hachem
Joe Hachem

Stud-8

A series of three Stud-8 hands has led to the demise of 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Joe Hachem.

Joe Hachem: {x-}{x-} / {2-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} / {x-}
George Danzer: {x-}{x-} / {a-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{6-Spades}{a-Diamonds} / {x-}
Greg Mueller: {x-}{x-} / {8-Spades}{j-Hearts} Fold

In the first, Hachem brought it in and George Danzer completed with the {A-Hearts} showing. Greg Mueller came along, Hachem called and fourth street was dealt. Danzer maintained the lead and bet, which prompted Mueller to fold. Hachem called and then both players checked fifth. Danzer returned to betting on sixth, Hachem called and it was off to seventh. Danzer bet a final time and Hachem opted to fold, leaving himself just 7,000 behind.

In the very next hand, Hachem got all in but managed a chop. In that same hand, Gary Benson dealt a big blow to Mueller.

In what would be Hachem's final hand, Benson made a pair for high and Mueller made a 7-6-4-2-A for a low. They chopped up the 2005 champ's last chips and sent him to the rail in 25th place.

Hang Escapes the Hangman's Noose

Level 17

Limit Hold'em

Action folded to Tommy Hang in the cutoff and he raised. Don Nguyen opted to three-bet from the small blind, Hang called and it was heads-up action to the {a-Spades}{j-Spades}{7-Hearts} flop. Nguyen bet, Hang called and the dealer burned and turned the {J-Clubs}. Nguyen bet for a second time and Hang called off his last 50,000.

Hang: {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}
Nguyen: {k-Spades}{10-Clubs}

Hang was well out in front with the cowboys and just needed to dodge a queen on the river to stay alive. That's exactly what he did when the harmless {a-Diamonds} peeled off on the river.

Song's Turn to Double

Level 17

Pot-Limit Omaha

Kevin Song opened for 25,000 form the cutoff and then called when Matthew Ashton three-bet to 96,000 from the big blind. When the flop came down {j-Spades}{9-Hearts}{3-Spades}, Ashton bet 198,000 and Song called off for 162,000.

Song: {5-Hearts}{9-Spades}{6-Clubs}{8-Hearts}
Ashton: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}{7-Hearts}

The {7-Clubs} turn and {6-Hearts} river completed the board and Song notched the double with a straight.

Chidwick Doubles Through Ly

Level 17

Pot-Limit Omaha

Mike Gorodinsky opened for 25,000 from the hijack and received three callers. The {8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} flop saw Minh Ly, who was in the small blind, lead out for 50,000 only to have Stephen Chidwick, who was in the big, raise all in for 219,000. Gorodinsky folded, Don Nguyen did the same from the cutoff and Ly made the call to put the Brit at risk.

Chidwick: {5-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{j-Spades}
Ly: {k-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{j-Hearts}

Chidwick flopped two pair and was looking to dodge the diamond draw of Ly. The {5-Spades} turn gave Chidwick a full house, and all he needed to do to survive was dodge a nine on the river. The dealer burned one last time and put out the {8-Hearts}.

Cassidy Scores a Triple in PLO

Level 17

Pot-Limit Omaha

Action folded to David Benyamine in the cutoff and he opened for 30,000. Kevin Song came along from the button and then Joe Cassidy three-bet to 126,000 from the big blind. Both Benyamine and Song put in the additional 96,000 and then called when Cassidy bet his last 76,000 on the {k-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}.

Both active players then checked the {2-Clubs} turn and {5-Diamonds} river, prompting the cards to be turned up.

Benyamine: {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{8-Hearts}
Song: {8-Spades}{7-Spades}{j-Hearts}{7-Hearts}
Cassidy: {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}{k-Spades}{5-Spades}

Cassidy had made two pair and it was good enough to take down the pot and score the triple.

Juanda the First to Go on Day 4

Razz

Kevin Song: {7-}{6-} / {4-}{3-}{9-}{7-} / {3-}
John Juanda: {6-}{5-} / {8-}{a-}{8-}{q-} / {q-}

Kevin Song completed only to have John Juanda raised. The two continued to raise back and forth until the latter was all in for 110,000. Song had a seven-six at the start and was ahead of Juanda's eight-six. The first two cards for song ended up giving him a made 9-7-6-4-3 low while Juanda ended up pairing his eight. He could still win with the right card on either sixth or seventh, but running queens was not what he needed. With that, Juanda became the first elimination of the day.

Nice Call by the Italian Pirate

Level 17

Razz

Tommy Hang: {x-}{x-} / {3-}{2-}{k-}{k-} / {x-}
Max Pescatori: {x-}{x-} / {j-}{5-}{7-}{7-} / {x-}

We picked up action of fourth when Hang bet and Pescatori called. That action repeated itself on fifth and then both players checked sixth. Hang returned to betting on seventh and Pescatori tanked for awhile before calling with {3-}{4-}{k-} for a jack-seven low. It was good as Hang tabled {6-}{6-}{8-} for a king-eight low..

Razz

Kevin Song: {3-}{2-} / {7-}{3-}{q-}{2-} / {a-}
John Juanda: {5-}{10-} / {a-}{8-}{7-}{9-} / {K-}

After Kevin Song completed, John Juanda raised all in for his last 39,000. Song made the call and the hands were flipped up. Song was best but immediately paired on fourth, which gave Juanda the lead. In the end, Juanda made a 9-7-8-5-A low and it was good enough to win the pot.
