Deeb Ousts Cloutier

Freddy Deeb had just opened a hand, then folded to an Eric Legoff reraise, leaving himself with just about 100,000. "I'll wait for something better," he said when letting his hand go.

On the very next hand, Deeb was open-raising all in, and it folded all of the way back around to Eric Cloutier in the big blind. He checked his cards, then said he was calling. Cloutier had actually slipped below 100,000 before the hand, and so he was the one at risk.

Cloutier had {A-Spades}{6-Clubs} and Deeb {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}. The cameras came over, and as the hands were moved over to the center of the table, Cloutier jokingly asked "You have the queens, right?" "We'll see what comes on the flop," answered Deeb. "Then you can decide which hand you want."

The board ran out {6-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{J-Spades}{3-Spades}, and it turned out queens was the hand to have. Cloutier shook hands with Deeb and departed.

"That was a good fold," said Roland Israelashvili afterwards, referring to the previous hand, and Deeb agreed.

Runner-Runner Spades Keep a Poker Legend Alive

Perry Green on Day 4.
Perry Green on Day 4.

At the start of the day, Perry Green, a living poker legend with World Series of Poker cashes dating back to 1976, gave the ceremonial, "Shuffle up and deal."

Green, who has three gold bracelets to his name (1976 $1,000 Limit Ace to Five Draw for $68,300; 1977 $5,000 Limit Ace to Five Draw for $10,000; and 1979 $1,500 No Limit Hold'em-Non Pro for $76,500) is the elder statesman left in the field at the age of 76, and is perhaps most recognizable for finishing runner-up to the legendary Stuey Ungar in the 1981 WSOP Main Event, which earned him a cool $150,000.

Green started the day on a fairly short stack, but recently found a bit of luck to extend his tournament life. It happened when Green moved all in under the gun for 146,000 holding {K-Diamonds}{10-Spades} and cleared the field all the way around to Michael Moreno, who called from the big blind with {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}.

It was a bad spot for Green, and the {7-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Spades} flop didn't provide much help. "He's got a sweat," someone at the table said when the {8-Spades} turned, giving Green a flush draw. Wouldn't you know it, the {A-Spades} peeled off on the river to complete the said flush and give Green a double.

"It's never easy," Green said as he clapped his hands together in celebration. Interestingly, this marks the first time Green has cashed in the Main Event since 1991 when he placed fifth for $69,000 and his fourth Main Event cash overall.

Kelly Keeps The Pressure On

Action folded all the way around to JP Kelly in the small blind, and he limped in. Kirill Rabtsov checked his option in the big blind, and the flop came down {9-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{7-Clubs}. Kelly fired out 16,000, and Rabtsov came along. The turn brought the {q-Diamonds}, and Kelly fired again, this time for 36,000. This time, Rabtsov kicked his cards in, and Kelly took the pot.

Kelly is up to 734,000 after that hand, while Rabtsov falls to 273,000.

Selbst Beats Baron

We caught up to see Vanessa Selbst and Isaac Baron heads up on a flop of {5-Clubs}{6-Spades}{10-Diamonds}. Selbst check-called a 30,000 bet from Baron and the two checked the turn that fell on the {Q-Hearts}.

The {3-Spades} dropped down on the river and Selbst checked for a third time. Baron fired 51,000 and Selbst quickly flung out a call.

"Ace-jack," said Baron.

Selbst tabled {10-Clubs}{9-Clubs} for a flopped pair of tens and dragged in the pot without saying a word. She's been chipping up nicely here on Day 5 and is currently sitting on about 1,840,000.

Quijano vs. Finkelstein

We caught the action on the {K-Clubs}{2-Spades}{6-Clubs} flop when Jeffrey Finkelstein bet 26,000 from middle position only to have Felipe Quijano raise to 100,000 right behind. Finkelstein wasted little time in moving all in, and Quijano called off for 278,000 total.

Showdown

Finkelstein{9-Clubs}{7-Clubs}
Quijano{A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}

Quijano was ahead with a pair of kings, but he needed to dodge the flush draw of Finkelstein. The {10-Diamonds} turn gave the latter some straight options, but the {5-Spades} river blanked. With that, Quijano doubled to 600,000.

Deeb Hanging On

It folded to Freddy Deeb in middle position who checked his cards, then declared he was all in. When Timothy Adams indicated he wanted to know how much Deeb had, Deeb immediately answered.

"98," he said, referring to his stack of 98,000. Then he leaned over to Eric Cloutier on his right. "Give me two thousand to make it a hundred," he said, and Cloutier jokingly pretended as though he was giving him a couple of yellow chips.

Adams finally folded, as did everyone else, and Deeb showed his hand — {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds} — as he dragged the small pot. "You make a good laydown, buddy?" he asked Adams, who answered "Yes, of course."

Clement Hits a King

Morten Ahrensbach raised to 27,000 from the hijack only to have Mark Clement move all in for 135,000 total from the cutoff. The button and blind both got out of the way, and after thinking about it for more than a minute, Ahrensbach made the call.

Showdown

Ahrensbach{4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}
Clement{K-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}

It was a classic race, but it was Clement's tournament life that was on the line. He was clearly nervous, but breathed a big sigh of relief when the flop fell {2-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{9-Spades} and gave him the lead. Neither the {A-Clubs} turn nor {A-Hearts} river changed a thing and Clement doubled on the hand.

Baron Calls Selbst's Barrels

Vanessa Selbst opened to 26,000 on the button, Isaac Baron called out of the big blind, and the flop fell {10-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{2-Hearts}. Baron check-called 28,000 from Selbst, and the turn brought the {10-Hearts}. Baron checked, Selbst fired 63,000, and Baron called.

The {4-Clubs} completed the board, and Baron checked a third time. Selbst bet 86,000, and Baron called, turning over {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}.

Selbst mucked, and Baron picked up the pot.
