Phan Makes Right Call On River

The board read {k-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}, with about 75,000 in the middle. John Phan had checked to his opponent, who fired out 45,000. We took a peak at the table because the floor had just come over to administer the clock on Phan, who according to a tablemate after the hand, had been thinking for four and a half minutes. It only took about 20 more seconds for Phan to toss in the call, and his opponent didn't look too thrilled by the call. He flashed {7-}{7-}, and Phan turn over a winning {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}.

After that boost, Phan is now sitting on 570,000.

Dozier Doubles Through Cody

Katie Dozier
Katie Dozier

A player in middle position opened for 18,000 and was called by Jake Cody on the button. Katie Dozier, who is a member of the Grindettes, then moved all in from the big blind for 74,000. The original raiser got out of the way and Cody made the call.

Showdown
Dozier: {6-Spades}{6-Diamonds}
Cody: {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

Dozier was ahead and looking to dodge big cards, which is exactly what she did when the board ran out {8-Clubs}{10-Spades}{3-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{2-Spades}. Dozier doubled to 175,000, while Cody dropped down to 105,000.

Binger Straightens Out

Michael Binger raised from early position only to have a short-stacked player move all in from middle position for 39,000. Binger thought long and hard before making the call:

Showdown

Binger{9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}
Opponent{Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}

Binger was way behind, but the {8-Clubs}{6-Spades}{10-Diamonds} flop did give him a gut-shot straight draw. Wouldn't you know it, the {7-Diamonds} spiked on the turn to give him the said straight and the lead. The {A-Clubs} river was of no consequence, and Binger took down the small pot while sending his opponent to the rail.

It's All About Benjamin

Benjamin Alcober
Benjamin Alcober

For the moment, anyway. That's because Benjamin Alcober is currently our new chip leader, having inched over 1 million chips just prior to the last break.

Just now Alcober was involved in a hand versus a single opponent. The pair together saw a {Q-Hearts}{J-Spades}{8-Diamonds} flop, with Alcober's opponent checking, Alcober betting 14,500, and his opponent calling. The turn brought the {3-Hearts} and another check from Alcober's opponent. This time he fired 21,000, and again was called.

Both players then checked the {A-Hearts} river. Alcober showed {K-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} for queens, but his opponent had {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} for two pair to take a few off the leader.

Rosen Closin' In On Another Cash

Steve Rosen is here today, having battled up from a short stack to more than average chips as we begin the last level of Day 3. Rosen is hoping to position himself a little better than was the case last year when the money bubble came around in the WSOP Main Event. Rosen was one of the super short stacks once hand-for-hand play commenced, but luckily managed to squeak into the money and earn his second WSOP Main Event cash.

Just now Rosen was opening with a raise to 8,500 from middle position, then 2011 November Niner Phil Collins reraised to 22,000 from the cutoff. It folded back to Rosen who thought for about a minute before calling.

The flop came {3-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}{3-Spades}, and Rosen didn't wait too long before betting 20,000. Collins considered Rosen's bet for a half-minute, then let his hand go.

Ho Staying Active

We found Maria Ho in the big blind in a hand against the player under the gun. The flop was {3-Clubs} {4-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds}, Ho checked and her opponent bet 9,000.

Ho called and the turn came {2-Spades}. Both players checked and the {J-Hearts} came on the river. Ho bet 29,000 and her opponent folded after some thought.

Ho is staying active, playing a lot of pots and has chipped up since dinner.

"I Was Born Without a Soul"

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

We heard some table chatter over on Table 4. A new dealer pushed in and the players asked her about her unique name spelled Shannone.

She explained that in high school she hated her name and couldn't change it so she changed how it was spelled. "It's what I was born with," she said.

"I was born without a soul," Will "Monkey" Souther said to her flatly.

She didn't have much of a response and started dealing.

Mercier Getting Short

There was 22,000 in the middle when we arrived to the table to see that Jason Mercier was heads up with an opponent. The board had run down {6-Spades}{9-Hearts}{k-Spades}{a-Spades}{q-Spades}, and Mercier checked to his opponent, who fired out 20,000. Mercier tanked for about a minute before chucking his cards away.

After that pot, Mercier is down to 64,000, and we expect that he will be getting those chips into the middle fairly soon.
