"I Need to See a Hand"

Giovanni "Malibu" Guarascio limped under the gun and action folded to Philipp Gruissem in the small blind. He made the call, Cary Katz checked his option from the big, and it was three-way action to the {3-Clubs}{9-Spades}{3-Spades} flop.

Both Gruissem and Katz checked, but the former woke up with a check-raise to 75,000 when Malibu bet 25,000. Katz got out of the way, Malibu made the call, and the {K-Clubs} turned. Both players checked, as they did on the {2-Spades} river, and neither were in a hurry to turn over their cards.

When Gruissem was informed he was the first to show, he simply mucked. Malibu was going to do the same, but the floor stopped him and said, "I need to see a hand."

Indeed, in this tournament a hand must be shown at the showdown to win, so Malibu flipped over {10-}{9-} for a pair of nines.

Schulman Shoves On Marchese

On the {4-Clubs}{3-Spades}{2-Hearts} flop, Tom Marchese had 75,000 in front of him and Nick Schulman put in a raise to 203,000. Marchese called and the turn brought the {K-Diamonds}. Acting first, Schulman moved all in for 643,000. Marchese tanked long and seemed rather pained by the decision, but in the end found a fold and Schulman won the pot to get back over 1.2 million in chips.

Morgan Takes from Dwan

John Morgan opened to 50,000 from under the gun, and the action folded to Tom Dwan who three-bet to 170,000 from the small blind. Morgan called, and the dealer fanned {j-Spades}{9-Spades}{2-Clubs}. Both players checked.

The turn was the {7-Spades}, and Dwan checked again. Morgan bet 110,000, and Dwan called.

The river was the {q-Clubs}, and both players checked again. Morgan tabled {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} and took down the pot.

Ivey Tank-Folds To Rajkumar

With several hundred thousand chips already in the middle on the {10-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} board, Phil Ivey had the action checked to him by Vivek Rajkumar. Ivey checked behind to see the {Q-Clubs} fall on the river. Rajkumar fired 525,000, a bet that sent Ivey into the tank for several long minutes. Eventually, Ivey folded his hand and Rajkumar scooped in the pot.

Get to Know Phil Ruffin

Level 5 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante

Phil Ruffin

We had the opportunity to learn a little bit about 76-year-old Phil Ruffin prior to the start of today's tournament. For example, the owner of the Treasure Island Resort here in Las Vegas has never played the World Series of Poker, though he learned to play the game in the army.

Ruffin, who dropped out of college, is playing in the tournament because of his partnership with Guy Laliberté in Mystere and is strictly looking to support One Drop. With an estimated net worth of $2.4 billion, it's safe to assume Ruffin is here more for the fun of it than for the money.

Hellmuth Just Calls

There's only one Phil Hellmuth.
There's only one Phil Hellmuth.

When we reached Table 411, the board read {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{q-Hearts}. Phil Hellmuth led out for 50,000, and Paul Phua raised to 150,000. Hellmuth thought for thirty seconds or so, then called.

The river was the {6-Spades}, and Hellmuth checked. Phua thought for no more than fifteen seconds, then fired 475,000.

"Call!" Hellmuth exclaimed, the second the chips hit the felt.

Phua tabled {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs} for sixes full of queens, but Hellmuth had him beat with {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} for queens full of aces.

"What...?" Rick Salomon blurted.

The table was shocked that Hellmuth just called, and some players began needling him.

"What were you afraid of?" Chamath Palihapitiya asked.

"Yeah," Salomon added. "There's no one at this table that doesn't get it in there."

"There's no one else at this table named Phil Hellmuth," Hellmuth shot back.

"There's also no one else that catches cards like you," Mike Sexton jabbed.

The conversation continued when we left, and while Phua is down to 475,000 chips, Hellmuth is up to 7.1 million.

Malibu Misses

We caught the action with a board reading {8-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} when Giovanni "Malibu" Guarascio had checked to Tobias Reinkemeier, who bet 230,000. Malibu has been nursing his short stack, which is still relatively deep in regards to the blinds, and he opted to make the call.

Both players then checked the {2-Spades} river and Malibu showed {K-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for a missed flush. Reinkemeier then showed {K-Clubs}{J-Spades} for a pair of jacks and the win.

Rast Busts Robl and Moves Over 8.3MM

Robl becomes elimination #2
Robl becomes elimination #2

After an open, Andrew Robl three-bet to 100,000 from the button and Brian Rast four-bet to 270,000 from the big blind. Action folded back to Robl and he made the call to see the {Q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{4-Clubs} flop.

On the flop, Rast fired 310,000. Robl raised to 735,000 and Rast came back with a shove. Robl had about 3.1 million on the flop and called all in. He held the {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} and Rast had the {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}. Robl's hand was best at the time, but Rast had the better flush draw along with the ace as an overcard.

The turn was the {9-Hearts} and kept Robl in the lead. The river completed the board with the {9-Clubs} and Rast spiked the ace-high flush to win the pot and bust Robl from the tournament.

Robl became the second player eliminated from the event while Rast moved to over 8.3 million in chips.

Tens for Robl

Andrew Robl and Sam Trickett were heads up with the board reading {2-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}. Robl checked, Trickett bet 56,000, and Robl called. The turn was the {9-Hearts}, and Robl checked again. Trickett tossed out 166,000, and Robl called.

The river was the {6-Spades}, and Robl checked a third time. Trickett checked behind.

"Tens," Robl announced, tabling {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}.

Trickett mucked, and Robl won the pot.
