Jesper's Huge Fold is the Wrong Move

Folding the winner on the river is one of the most painful -- and expensive -- mistakes a poker player can make. We came to Jesper Hougaard's table to see the Dane involved in a big pot. There had been some pre-flop raising and a bet that was called on a flop of {j-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}. Both Hougaard and his opponent checked the {2-Diamonds} turn, bringing the action to the {k-Clubs} river, which paired the board. Hougaard had first action and bet 60,000. His opponent raised to 162,000.

"I had you an ace-king the whole time," said Hougaard. He agonized over his decision for several minutes before open-folding {j-}{j-} for a full house, jacks full of kings. Hougaard begged his opponent to show as well. That player obliged, but he didn't open ace-king. He showed {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs} for a very gutsy bluff.

Hougaard is down to 550,000.
