Matt Marafioti Doubles Through Amnon Filippi

Matt Marafioti

Noah Boeken led off the action with a raise to 27,000 from UTG. Amnon Filippi flat-called from the cutoff and Matt Marafioti reraised to 86,000 from the small blind. Boeken got out of the way, and Filippi slid out two towers of pink chips totaling 200,000, setting Marafioti all-in. He snap-called.

Marafioti {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}
Filippi {A-Clubs}{K-Hearts}

Marafioti's aces held up on the {K-Spades}{10-Spades}{6-Spades}{5-Hearts}{4-Spades} boar and he doubled to 440,000. Filippi was left with 325,000.

Calderaro Can't Call

James Calderaro opened for 30,000 and Noah Boeken re-potted to 108,000 from the button, leaving himself only 21,000 behind.

"If I show him my cards, is my hand dead?" wondered Calderaro aloud as he contemplated his decision. "It's probably dead anyway," he laughed.

A nearby floor supervisor told him that his hand wouldn't be dead, but he would incur a penalty.

"In this game, that's actually not so bad," offered Allen Kessler.

Calderaro folded, telling the table he had {A-Clubs}{2-Clubs}. Boeken showed ace-queen and raked in the pot.

Patrick Walsh Eliminated in 22nd Place ($21,665)

Sam Stein raised to 27,000 to open the pot, and he called an all-in reraise for about 62,000 total from Patrick Walsh.

Stein: {A-Clubs} {Q-Spades}
Walsh: {7-Spades} {7-Hearts}

The flop was a clean {9-Clubs} {5-Spades} {2-Diamonds} for Walsh, as table mate Amnon Filippi mumbled something about this tournament turning into a coin flip war. The turn {A-Hearts}, however, was a disaster for Walsh, and the river {J-Clubs} ushered him out the door in 22rd place.

Dustin Woolf Eliminated in 23rd Place ($21,665)

Clement Thurmy raised from under the gun, and another reraise from Dustin Woolf resulted in the rest of his chips getting into the pot preflop. It was Woolf at risk with ace-jack, and it was a race for double or nothing against Thurmy's pocket fours.

There was a third four on the flop for Thumy, and that was bad news for Woolf. Unable to win a coin flip today, "Neverwin" is out in 23rd place.

Vitaly Lunkin Eliminated in 24th Place ($21,665)

On a flop of {A-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}, Vitaly Lunkin checked to Clement Thumy, who bet 33,000. Lunkin raised to 90,000 and after a moment in the tank, Thumy reraised enough to set Lunkin all-in. The Russian didn't look happy about it, but nevertheless he made the call.

Lunkin {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}
Thumy {A-Hearts}{6-Hearts}

Lunkin was looking for a diamond or running cards but missed, the turn and river falling the {3-Spades} and the {10-Spades} to send him to the rail in 24th place.

Thumy is the new chip leader, with about 925,000.

Amnon Gets Away Cheap

Yeah, I smelled something funny there
Yeah, I smelled something funny there

Amnon Filippi opened for 38,000 from middle position and James Calderaro called from the big blind. Calderaro led out for 40,000 on the {8-Hearts}{2-Spades}{6-Clubs} flop and Filippi called. Both players checked the {9-Spades} on the turn. The river was the {A-Spades}. Calderaro checked and Filippi made what turned out to be a very smart check behind.

Calderaro showed {5-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for a nine-high straight and took down the pot.

"Wow. Really glad he didn't value bet the river," muttered Filippi. He's down to 265,000 while Calderaro is up to 480,000.

John Dwyer Eliminated in 25th Place ($21,665)

Well ace-four is just going to be unkind to John Dwyer today.

After doubling up Matt Marafioti with ace-four, Dwyer got his last few chips into the pot with {A-Spades} {K-Spades} against Amnon Filippi's {A-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds}. There was a four right in the door, though, and the board of {2-Clubs} {9-Spades} {4-Spades} {2-Hearts} {5-Hearts} is the last Dwyer will see today.

He's been given the rest of the day off with a paid vacation for more than $20,000. Not such a bad deal.

Marafioti Finds His Double

Matt Marafioti raised to 36,000 preflop, and John Dwyer reraised the pot to 96,000 total. Marafioti had just 121,000 chips to start the hand, and he got them all in there with {A-Spades} {J-Clubs}. He was in good shape to double as Dwyer called him down with {A-Clubs} {4-Diamonds}.

Marafioti was visibly nervous as he stood behind his chair and reacted to every card on a safe board of {8-Clubs} {8-Diamonds} {K-Spades} {6-Clubs} {3-Diamonds}. With a little fist pump, Marafioti has earned an early double up to 242,000.

Dwyer is now dangerously short with just 45,000.
