Every Rosen Has its Thorns

Hold'em

Cornel Cimpan opened with a raise to 20,000 first in from the button. In the small blind was Jamie Rosen, and he stacked out a re-raise to make it 55,000 straight. After Cimpan got the count, he announced, "All in," (for 176,000) and Rosen snap-called.

Showdown
Cimpan: {K-Diamonds} {J-Spades}
Rosen: {Q-Spades} {Q-Clubs}

The flop was no help to the at-risk Cimpan, coming down {10-Spades} {5-Hearts} {2-Spades}. Salvation would come on the turn though, as the {K-Spades} improved him to the leading pair of kings. Rosen now needed a queen or a spade to eliminate his foe, but the {6-Clubs} was a river blank.

Rosen looked none too pleased as he cut out a hunk of chips and sent most of his stack over to Cimpan. Rosen has fallen all the way down to 80,000 after that encounter, while Cimpan is approaching 400,000.

Better Than Nothing

Omaha

Jonas Entin opened with a raise to 17,000 from late position, and Daniel Makowsky called in the big blind.

The flop came {7-Spades}{8-Clubs}{8-Spades}. Makowsky bet 22,000, and Entin called. The turn was the {Q-Diamonds}. Makowsky studied the board for some time, then said "I check." Entin quickly tapped the table.

The river was the {3-Diamonds}. Makowsky said he checked again. Entin bet 36,000, and Makowsky stacked up enough to call, brooded for a few seconds, then tossed out the chips.

Entin showed {A-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{10-Spades}{9-Clubs}. "What's that? Nothing?" said Makowsky. Indeed, Entin just had ace-high. Makowsky turned over {Q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{9-Spades}, and took the pot.

Makowsky has 535,000 now, while Entin has tumbled to 115,000.

Chris Chang Eliminated in 17th Place ($10,293)

Chris Chang - 17th Place
Chris Chang - 17th Place
Gary Do limped into the pot from early position, and Jamie Rosen put in a pot-sized raise to 27,000. Action came to Chris Chang who had just 29,000 chips left, and he smiled and said, "I raise," drawing a chuckle from the table. With him all in, Do ducked out, and Rosen flicked in the extra 2,000 chips.

Showdown
Rosen: {A-Hearts} {A-Spades} {2-Spades} {7-Diamonds}
Chang: {A-Clubs} {J-Hearts} {10-Clubs} {8-Clubs}

The board would run down {9-Hearts} {2-Hearts} {9-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} {9-Spades}, giving Rosen the winning full house. With that, Chris Chang becomes our 17th-place finisher, taking home more than $10,000 for his work.

Hold'em

With the action folded around to the blinds, Tony Cousineau opened with a raise from the small blind. Paul Parker moved him all-in from the big, and Cousineau called off his remaining 44,000 chips.

Showdown
Cousineau: {J-Hearts} {5-Hearts}
Parker: {J-Spades} {9-Diamonds}

The board was a big dry desert for the at-risk Cousineau, coming down {6-Spades} {Q-Hearts} {7-Clubs} {3-Clubs} {10-Diamonds}. Paul Parker adds 44,000 chips to his stack, sending Tony Cousineau to the payout desk in 18th place.

Kabbaj Doubles through Makowsky

Hold'em

"All right, pot-limit hold'em," said the dealer as he tossed the cards around the table for the first hand of the second orbit.

It folded to John Kabbaj in middle position. "Pot," he said quietly, the upturn at the end of the word indicating his questioning how much that would be. "28 dimes," called Tony Cousineau from the other end of the table, helping out. Kabbaj pushed a stack of 28,000 before him.

All folded to Daniel Makowsky in the big blind, who sat back in his chair and stretched his arms. Finally he announced a pot-sized reraise. Kabbaj reraised all in, and Makowsky called.

Makowsky showed {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} and Kabbaj {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}. The board came {K-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}. Kabbaj gave a little affirmative nod of the head there when the last community card was dealt, clearly glad that he'd survived. He's now up to about 230,000, while Makowsky now has 445,000.

Doubling Kabbaj

Omaha

John Kabbaj opened with a pot raise to 18,000. Action passed back to Najib Bennani in the big blind, and he called to see a flop.

It showed up {6-Diamonds} {7-Spades} {2-Spades}. Bennani quickly announced, "Pot," sliding a big tower of chips forward. Just as quickly, Kabbaj made the call, putting himself all in for 35,000 in the process.

Showdown
Kabbaj: {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs} {9-Clubs} {3-Diamonds}
Bennani: {A-Spades} {K-Clubs} {8-Diamonds} {7-Clubs}

Kabbaj was leading but at risk for his tournament life. The turn and river would come safe though, as the {9-Diamonds} and {9-Spades} filled out the board. Kabbaj's trip nines are the winner, and he has earned himself an early double up.

No Respect

Omaha

Tony Cousineau opened with a raise to 18,000 from middle position, then John Kabbaj called from the cutoff, Jonas Entin called from the small blind, and a short-stacked Hevad Khan also called from the big blind.

"What the hell's going on here?" Cousineau cracked, responding to the crowd that had joined him in the hand.

The flop came {A-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}. Entin checked, and Khan pushed in his last 35,000. The others all folded, and Khan is now back up to 110,000.

"I ought to bet."

Omaha

With the board showing {4-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} and 22,000 in the pot, Najib Bennani checked, Jonas Entin bet the pot, and after some thought Bennani called. The river was the {9-Spades}. Bennani checked again. Entin paused, and said "I ought to bet" before checking, too.

"Got the ten?" asked Bennani. "Yeah, I turned the straight," answered Entin, showing {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. Entin takes the pot. He's up to 210,000, while Benanni slips to 174,000.

Ready or Not

On the first hand dealt on Table #150, a couple of the players were still stacking their chips, including Ben Grundy. The piles of chips didn't leave a lot of room on the table for cards, and while it wasn't clear what happened exactly, apparently in the process of dealing and during the preflop action the dealer accidentally killed Grundy's hand.

Grundy objected, saying he hadn't time to protect his cards. The floor was called, and indeed the hand was declared dead.

"You got me steaming already!" said Grundy, half-joking. The table laughed. The hand was folded preflop and now everyone has their chips neatly stacked and play continues.
