Kenna Runs Into a Bigger Pair... Twice

Stephen Kenna's heart must have sunk through the floor of the Amazon Room. On back-to-back hands, he found himself involved in a big pot holding a big pocket pair that was smaller than his opponent's. First, holding pocket jacks, he called the 178,000-chip preflop all-in of Edward Zane, who showed pocket queens. The board came {10-Hearts} {10-Clubs} {2-Clubs} {5-Diamonds} {3-Clubs} to give each player an overpair, but Zane's was the better of the two. That hand dropped Kenna to 370,000 and doubled Zane up to 400,000.

The very next hand, Kenna was dealt {10-Spades} {10-Diamonds}. After some heavy preflop action, Kenna called an all-in from Leo Fernandez for roughly 260,000 in chips. Again he was behind -- Fernandez tabled {K-Spades} {K-Diamonds} -- but this time Kenna managed to flop a set, {J-Hearts} {10-Clubs} {6-Hearts}. The board bricked out {2-Hearts} {4-Diamonds}, allowing him to build his stack back up to about 640,000. Fernandez was eliminated.
