2008 World Series of Poker
39th Annual World Series of Poker Main Event
Day: 3
The board came with a jack-high flop, and the turn and river helped neither player.
"It's funny how that a fire alarm goes off and nobody moves. Let a clock hit zero, and everyone runs."
When observing a player who is short-stacked he said, "That guy only has about 30,000. He hasn't done anything in awhile."
Another person commented, "Some people play to win and some are money people."
McEachern: "He looks like a money person."
Smith has been playing solid poker and is really using his big stack well. There have been few pots that Smith has given up at his table, and he will be a true force to tangle with, especially with the chip stack he has built.
There is no guarantee that Smith will go deep in the Main Event, but it sure looks like it. In previous years, Joe Hachem and Jerry Yang didn't hold the chip lead going into the money, but they were still able to play their cards just right to take it down. Jamie Gold had a massive chip lead going into the money and rode it all the way to the final table, and for the win. Smith does have Sigurd Eskeland hot on his heels, but at the opposite end of the room. Besides Smith, there isn't anyone who has half the chips he has at his table.
On the turn of the , Chan again checked to his opponent, who bet out 23,000. Chan made the call.
The river fell the and once again Chan checked to his opponent, who bet out 58,000. Chan once again made the call.
Chan showed and his opponent showed .
After the hand, Chan moved up to 336,000 in chips.
