When Poker Becomes Unimportant

We have at least two unclaimed stacks in the room today, one of which belongs to Vimy Ha. His chips reside at Table Blue 16, but he has not touched them today, and it is now clear that they will be unused for the duration of the Main Event.

PokerNews received word today that Vimy's young niece and nephew, one and three years old, respectively, tragically drowned in their pool in Coppell, Texas yesterday evening. Vimy flew out from Las Vegas first thing this morning to be with his family, and he has not returned to play Day 3.

Vimy Ha's overnight chip count was 190,600, and right now there are still 99,100 of them in front of his empty chair. With each round of play costing 8,100 chips, it is actually feasible that Ha could cash despite his absence, though that is no matter to him at the present.

Every now and then, we receive an unfortunate reminder of what is really important in life, and poker is certainly not at the top of the list. PokerNews offers our sincerest condolences to Ha and his family.

Lay Down and Saab

On a flop of {8-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{6-Spades} with five players, Dave Saab bets 10,000 and Frankie O'Dell raises to 28,000. Everyone else folds and Saab pops it up to 67,000. O'Dell calls.

The turn is {K-Spades} and Saab checks. Frankie bets all in and Saab folds.

O'Dell now has 330,000 and Saab is down to 140,000.

Ron Jenkins Crippled

Jenkins from Day 1b

On the turn, with the board showing {A-Diamonds} {10-Clubs} {K-Spades} {Q-Hearts}, Ron Jenkins bet 40,000 and a player in late position made the call. On the river of the {10-Hearts}, Jenkins checked and his opponent bet out 80,000. Jenkins made the call.

Jenkins showed {A-Hearts} {K-Clubs} for top two pair, while his opponent showed {Q-Clubs} {J-Clubs} for the nut straight.

After the hand, Jenkins has only 22,300 remaining.

Kost-ly River

Alexander Kostritsyn made it 9,000 to go from late position and was called by the player in the cutoff. The flop fell {J-Diamonds} {9-Clubs} {K-Clubs} and Alexander checked. His opponent bet out 30,000 and Alexander moved in enough chips to place his opponent all in.

His opponent called and showed {K-Spades} {Q-Spades} for top pair, while Alexander turned over {J-Spades} {10-Spades} for mid pair and a gutshot. The {A-Clubs} on the turn was of no help, but the {Q-Diamonds} on the river completed his straight and eliminated his opponent. After the hand, Alexander is back up to 470,000.

"I'm Not a Donkey"

Jean-Robert Bellande just stopped me as I walked past him and asked me to clear something up for him. It was reported yesterday that he won a pot after reraising all in on a gutshot straight draw and hitting. This was true, but in our coverage we didn't report the suits of the cards he was holding. He was holding the {4-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds} which actually gave him a straight flush draw and therefore made his move a lot more feasible, and in most people's eyes, the correct play.

Jean-Robert has received a lot of flack from his buddies saying he played it like a donk. Let's hope he gets some peace now and support as we near the money in the Main Event.

I Can't Help Myself, I'll Bluff You and Everybody Else

Would someone with this face bluff you?
Would someone with this face bluff you?
On a flop of {6-Spades} {7-Hearts} {3-Clubs}, Gus Hansen check-raised enough to put Doug Craine all in and Craine made the call.

Hansen: {A-Hearts} {5-Hearts}
Doug Craine: {Q-Hearts} {Q-Spades}

When the turn fell the {A-Clubs}, Hansen said, "That's a good card for me."
The river fell the {8-Hearts} and Craine was eliminated.

Another player at the table asked Hansen, "Why did you try and bluff him?"

Hansen: "I couldn't help myself."

Hansen moved up to 296,000 after the hand.

Van Nguyen Builds Back

On a flop of {5-Clubs} {7-Hearts} {6-Hearts}, a player from middle position moved all in for 25,000. Van Nguyen called and showed {A-Clubs} {K-Hearts} while her opponent showed {A-Hearts} {J-Hearts}. The turn was the {Q-Diamonds} and the river brought the {3-Spades}. Neither player made a pair, and Van's A-K was good enough to take it down.

Afterwards, she increased her chip stack to 190,000.
