A Legend in the Field

When Stu Ungar won his first two World Championships in 1980 and 1981, Heimowitz made both final tables. And if it wasn't for one fateful hand, it might've been Heimowitz's picture up there as the 1981 champion. He held pocket Queens and was up against against Ungar's pocket Jacks. Both players had big stacks and the winner of that pot would have a dominant chip lead. But that year pocket Queens were a fateful hand that changed the fortunes of many players, and Ungar ended up with quad Jacks to eliminate Heimowitz on his way to his second title.
The previous year, Heimowitz finished third in the World Series Main Event--behind Ungar and Doyle Brunson. As Heimowitz modestly said, he had a "ringside seat to history." Although, with six bracelets, he's made a good bit of history himself. And short stack or no, one of the class acts of poker could make some more history over the next two days.
