Satellite-Winner Daniel Smyth Wins WPT World Online Championships Knockout Championship ($428,391)

The World Poker Tour prides itself on its rich history, the prestige of its tournaments and the stories of its winners. Well, another story has just been written after Daniel Smyth turned a $33 WPT satellite into a $428,391 payday.

Smyth defeated a field of 1,038 players to win the WPT World Online Championships Event #5: $3,200 Knockout Championship, seeing off competition from the likes of WPT Champion Ryan Riess and eventual runner-up Manig Loeser.

The Irishman wasn't the only player to emerge with a huge score from very little investment. Brazil's Joao Maureli won his seat for free in the WPT Ticket Drop promotion, and he turned that into over $174,000 for his third-place finish.

Final Table Recap

Brazil's Joao Maureli was the chip leader to start the final table and it took half an hour before the first elimination of the day, with Matheus Resende's queens falling to fellow Brazilian Maureli's ace-king.

Pedro Marques had doubled with aces through Ryan Riess' ace-king to stay alive, and he then sent Shyngis Satubayev to the rail.

Smyth had been sitting in a comfortable position, but was left with ten big blinds after Pim Gieles doubled through him. However, Smyth would double through Artur Martirosian before sending the last WPT Champion Ryan Riess out in sixth.

Moments later, Martirosian crashed out at the hands of Pedro Marques before Smyth secured yet another double to remain afloat. Marques and Gieles fell to bring play to three-handed with start-of-day chip leader Maureli having fallen to bottom spot behind Smyth and chip leader Loeser.

Smyth vs Loeser Heads-up WPT WOC

Maureli was eliminated by Smyth, who closed the gap to Loeser ahead of heads-up play, but was still behind.

  • Manig Loeser: 65.4 million (93 big blinds)
  • Daniel Smyth: 36.9 million (53 big blinds)

But not for long...

Daniel Smyth 22 limped on the button and Manig Loeser Q9 checked. The flop came KJ2 and Loeser bet 1.1 million. Smyth raised to 3.5 million and Loeser called.

The turn was the Q and Loeser checked. Smyth bet 5.3 million and Loeser called.

The river was the 5. Loeser checked again and Smyth shoved for 26.6 million. Loeser called and Smyth doubled into the chip lead with his flopped set

Loeser did managed to wrestle back the chip lead, but Smyth took it over once more and saw things out to become the latest WPT Champion.
