Gomes Caught Bluffing

Alexandre Gomes decided to get tricky in this hand and in the end, it has cost him roughly 35% of his stack.

The players in the cutoff and small blind had limped in and Gomes popped it to 3,600 from the big blind. Both opponents called and the flop came down {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{2-Spades}. It was checked to Gomes and he fired 5,600, quickly ridding the pot of the player in the cutoff. The player in the small blind, though, called after about two minutes in the tank.

The {10-Diamonds} hit the turn and again the action was checked to Gomes. He bet 35,000, covering his opponent's stack. After about another two minutes thinking it over, his opponent called all in for 28,075.

"Good call," said Gomes, turning over {Q-Spades}{2-Hearts}. His opponent tabled {10-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and Gomes found no help from the {K-Spades} river card, dropping to about 65,000.

Straight to the Eight for Inizan

Marc Inizan opened from early position with a raise to 1,375. "Passe... passe... passe," said the dealer as the table folded around to the player in the cutoff seat. Incidentally, both French and English are the official languages for this event, and we're hearing dealers using both, while the players most often are speaking French.

The player in the cutoff called Inizan's raise, and the remaining players all chose to "passe" as well. The flop came {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{4-Clubs}, and both players checked. The turn brought the {7-Hearts} and a bet of 1,500 from Inizan. His opponent raised to 5,000, and Inizan called without much delay.

The river came the {6-Diamonds}. Inizan paused a moment, then checked, and his opponent checked as well. Inizan waited as his opponent slowly showed one of his cards -- the {3-Hearts} -- giving him a straight. Inizan then flipped his over, showing {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} for the better straight. After a brief explanation to Inizan's opponent -- in English, actually -- the dealer flipped his opponent's other card to show the {K-Hearts} before pushing both into the muck, and the chips toward Inizan.

Inizan keeps battling, and now has 24,000.

Rony Upsets Cordero

Tristan Clemençon opened to 1,500, and Damien Rony just called. Next to act, Mario Cordero three-bet. Action folded back to Clemençon, who gave up his hand. Rather than following suit, Rony moved all in, and Cordero quickly called with the rest of his stack. Rony threw up his hands when he saw that his {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades} were in terrible shape against Cordero's {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}.

But it quickly became Cordero's turn for exasperation. The {a-Spades}{j-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop gave Rony's set of jacks the lead. The {3-Spades} turn and {k-Clubs} river failed to rescue Cordero. He made some fake weeping noises as he got up, earning a laugh from the table and a farewell handshake from Rony. After busting Cordero, Rony moved up to 46,000.

A Good Orbit for Mars

Jean-Jacques Mars had been struggling, but during the last round of hands managed to pick up a couple of pots in an effort to turn things around.

In the latter of those hands, Mars was one of three players still involved by the turn. The board showed {7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{6-Spades} and about 3,500 sat in the middle. Mars checked from the big blind, and the player in middle position made a small bet of 1,300. The third player, sitting in late position, folded, and Mars made the call.

The river brought the {5-Hearts}. Mars tossed out a lavender-colored 10,000 chip, announcing a bet of 5,000. His opponent thought for a full minute before tossing his cards.

That hand pushes Mars back to 28,000.

Ride 'Em, Rony

Damien Rony raised preflop and picked up a call from the rather quiet Chilipoker qualifier on the button. She tossed out a single pink T5,000 chip, but the dealer confirmed that she'd meant to call. The flop came down {q-Spades}{4-Spades}{4-Hearts}, and Rony bet 2,625. His opponent again threw out a pink chip, this time saying "five thousand." The floor was called since she hadn't made a legal raise, and it was ruled that since she had announced a bet of more than half of a legal raise, she'd have to double Rony's bet. Rony called the minbet, and on to the {5-Spades} turn. He quickly checked, and the button checked behind. The {3-Clubs} peeled off on the river, and Rony was done checking. He bet 7,600, and after a moment, his opponent called. Rony tabled {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}, and his overpair was good for the pot, moving him up to 58,000.

Gomes Vaults Back to Six Figures

Just before the break, Alexandre Gomes won a significant pot against Damien Rony to get back to 100,000.

From early position Rony raised to 1,300. Gomes was next to act and he popped it to 4,000. The rest of the table folded and Rony four-bet to 10,700. Gomes called and the flop came down {J-Hearts}{9-Spades}{8-Hearts}. Both checked and the {A-Spades} followed on the turn. Rony bet 8,200, but couldn't shake Gomes. The river brought the {9-Diamonds} and Rony checked. Gomes sat still for about a minute before betting 20,800, sending Rony into the tank.

Four minutes later Rony called, looking absolutely stunned to see Gomes table {9-Hearts}{6-Hearts} for trips.

Rony: Down to roughly 28,000
Gomes: Up to about 101,000

Disheartening Descent for Erscent

With the board showing {10-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{K-Hearts}, Francois Erscent bet 2,400 -- about a pot-sized bet -- and his lone opponent, sitting to his left, made the call. The river then brought the {7-Diamonds}, prompting another bet from Erscent, this time 3,600. His opponent again called.

Erscent turned over his hand {7-Hearts}{5-Hearts} -- a heart flush. Then his opponent tabled his -- {8-Hearts}{4-Hearts}. Erscent searched the ceiling, somewhat exasperated, as the dealer pushed the pot toward his opponent.

Erscent slips back to about 31,000, just a tad above the starting stack.

Nitsche Slips

With about 6,500 in the pot, Dominik Nitsche called a bet of 5,000 from his lone opponent in the hand on an {A-Spades}{K-Spades}{8-Hearts} flop. Both checked when the {9-Diamonds} turn card hit and after the {Q-Diamonds} landed on the river, Nitsche was faced with a bet of 10,000. He called, but mucked when his opponent tabled {K-Clubs}{Q-Spades}.

Nitsche fell to about 38,000.
