Francois Goulet Wins World Cup of Cards 6-Max for $7,050

Event #9 Champion Francois Goulet ($7,050)
Event #9 Champion Francois Goulet ($7,050)

The ninth event of the World Cup of Cards featured a $330 NL Hold'em 6-Max tournament, boasting a guarantee of $30,000. As expected, the event attracted a strong field of 181 entries crushing the guarantee and boosting the prize pool to $52,671.

Among the leaders for the majority of the day, Francois Goulet entered six-handed play as one of the short stacks. When Michael Korovine busted in seventh place, the final six decided to look at the numbers, pausing the clock to discuss a deal. The short-stacked Goulet negotiated a bit of extra prize money and the remaining players agreed to the terms. Here is how the deal shaped up in order of position.

PlaceNamePrize (CAD)
1Francois Goulet$7,050
2Michael Levy$7,520
3Yohann Wagner$6,680
4Sebastien Morin$6,420
5Michel Cloutier$6,251
6Joey Boczek$6,100

As an event rule, the tournament must be played out to an eventual champion. The deal must also leave 2% for the winner, leaving the final six $1,050 to play for.

On the final hand, Goulet had Levy all-in and at risk preflop holding {a-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} against the {k-Clubs}{10-Hearts} of Levy. The board ran out {q-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{5-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} and Levy was eliminated in second place.

Goulet took over the chip lead in a back-to-back confrontation with sixth-place finisher Joey 'birdman' Boczek. A hand after Boczek doubled up Goulet, failing to improve with {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts} against Goulet's {8-Diamonds}{8-Spades}, the tables had turned and Boczek was the one at risk against Goulet. Boczek was all-in preflop holding {10-Hearts}{7-Hearts} but again found himself behind, with Goulet tabling {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}. The board ran out {2-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{j-Spades} and Boczek was eliminated, giving Goulet the chip lead.

A few to cash but fall short of the final table included Samuel Roussy (8th - $1,600), Philippe Belley (10th - $1,000), RDS poker analyst and Playground celebrity Laurence 'Ladyluckpoker' Grondin (14th $750), and John Toth (19th - $600).

One of the more popular events to take place during festivals at Playground Poker Club, six-max always brings out the best fields. Some players to pass through were Ami Alibay, Kathy Sawers, Isabelle Tremblay, Michael Malm, Jonathan Bussieres, and Jean-Philippe Piquette.
