The 2014 Summer Slam kicked off Friday morning at the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, New York. The opening event was a $200 no-limit hold'em deepstack turbo tournament which attracted 108 total entries, and after an action-packed day of preflop shoves it ended with a five-way chop. Scott Hosbach was the chip leader at the time of the chip and was ruled the official winner, collecting $3,100 and the Event #1 trophy.

Also included in the deal were Paula Rasmussen, Matthew Caramanna, Brett Ansel and Greg Illig, all of whom received $2,600.

Many of Western New York’s top poker talents were on display on Friday. Among the pros who competed were Andy Spears, Jason Nablo, Travell Thomas, Randy Pfeifer and D.J. MacKinnon. Only MacKinnon was still standing when the money bubble approached with 14 remaining, and he was able to sneak in after two players were eliminated simultaneously.

At one table, Hosbach limped from middle position and David Villaincourt shoved for around 90,000 (five big blinds) from late position. Action folded back to Hosbach and he snap-called.

Villancourt: {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}
Hosbach: {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}

Hosbach's trap worked, and his kings held up through the {4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{A-Diamonds} board to eliminate Villaincourt.

Meanwhile, one-time chip leader Aaron Olshan was eliminated at the next table over when his pocket kings were run down by Greg Illig’s ace-jack.

The remaining 12 players were all guaranteed $366, and they began falling quickly. The average stack at that point was around 10 big blinds and Chris Myers and Robert Lucas both hit the exits quickly before the final table was reached.

From there, Darrin Bracken, Sam Gercio, Paul McLean, MacKinnon and Steve Rumery were sent packing. MacKinnon had a roller-coaster final table, holding the chip lead at one point before losing several key pots. His last stand came when he moved all in with the {A-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} and couldn’t overcome the {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} of Ansel.

The remaining five players then went on a break and came to terms on the aforementioned deal.

Break It Up

Level 22 : 20,000/40,000, 4,000 ante

Following that flurry of eliminations, the final five payers are on a 10-minute break. We're going to take on with them, but we promise we'll have updated counts upon their return.

D.J. MacKinnon Eliminated in 7th Place ($733)

Level 22 : 20,000/40,000, 4,000 ante
D.J. MacKinnon

D.J. MacKinnon's roller-coaster final table came to a crashing halt to Brett Ansel. MacKinnon moved all in with the {A-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} and Ansel called with the {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}, and MacKinnon whiffed on the {7-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} board. He wished his former tablemates good luck and made his way to the cage.

Paul McLean Eliminated in 8th Place ($593)

Level 22 : 20,000/40,000, 4,000 ante

After being left with well less than a big blind a few hands ago, Paul McLean got the rest of his chips in the middle with {Q-Spades}{2-Clubs} against Paula Rasmussen's {10-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. It looked good for McLean on the {Q-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{A-Spades} flop, but the {K-Diamonds} turn gave Rasmussen Broadway to put a stranglehold on the hand. The {A-Diamonds} sealed the deal, and McLean hit the rail.

Sam Guercio Eliminated in 9th Place ($471)

Level 22 : 20,000/40,000, 4,000 ante

Sam Guercio moved all in from early position for 119,000. Matthew Caramanna called from middle position, and Paul McLean moved all in for around 110,000 more. Caramanna paused for a moment before announcing a call, and he and Guercio were at risk.

Guercio: {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}
McLean: {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}
Caramanna: {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}

Caramanna's pair was in front and he pumped his fist after the board ran out {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{6-Hearts}, eliminating Guercio and crippling McLean.
