Derrick Contreras Bags Chip Lead Ahead of 38 Players Heading to Day 2 of RGPS Tunica Main Event
Derrick Contreras is the chip leader at the end of Day 1a of the RunGood Poker Series main event at Horseshoe Tunica.
Contreras said earlier in the day that he got pocket kings in a favorable spot. He managed to ride that stack up to over 200,000 and eventually bagged 222,000.
He is joined in the top five by Mel Lyon, a familiar face to the RGPS, who finished second in chips with 164,500 — more than 50,000 behind the chipleading Contreras.
Ray Henson (159,000) bagged third, followed by Connie Rice (139,000) and Chad Marsh (138,500).
There were 137 players that queued up Friday night and the field is expected to explode with two more flights Saturday. Chris Moneymaker got some footing early, but fell during the middle levels of Day 1a.
David Hendrix found himself in a similar place, busting in the middle of the day. One of the previous winners of this event, Tiffany Keathley, was eliminated but remained on the rail in support of friends who were still in. Most of these players are expected to return in later flights for a shot at the $100,000 guarantee prizepool.
The main event continues Saturday and PokerNews.com will be bringing you all the updates and photos from the event all weekend long.
