Homegrown Players Show Out on Day 1 in Barcelona High Roller

Level 10 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
David Lopez Llacer
David Lopez Llacer

The €10,300 High Roller in Barcelona has historically had one of the strongest turnouts at PokerStars events in Barcelona, and the one here for the PokerStars Championship Barcelona was no different as 542 entries have been logged so far after the first day of action.

Spanish players turned in a strong effort on their home turf, finishing with three of the top five chip counts by day's end.

Leading the way is David Lopez Llacer, who turned his 50,000 starting stack into 362,100 after 10 one-hour levels. Lopez Llacer, who finished runner-up at WSOPE Main Event in 2015 to Kevin MacPhee, is best known for his outstanding online exploits as "davaman." He was reportedly the fastest Spanish player to reach Supernova Elite status, thanks to grinding hyperturbo sit-n-gos.

Sitting in third place is perhaps Spain's current crown jewel, Adrian Mateos. The budding tournament superstar has racked up millions in winnings before even hitting the age of 25. He finished the day with 299,800, while fellow Spaniard Raul Martinez ended with 281,500, good for fifth place.

Others in the top five were Austria's Markus Durnegger (315,000) and Canada's Christopher Kruk, who just the previous night

won the €5,000 turbo here for a cool €80,000.

And while PokerStars Team Pro Andre Akkari is representing the company with aplomb in the Main Event, where he bagged the chip lead heading into the final two tables, his teammates Jake Cody is doing his best to keep up. The British pro bagged 204,500. Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier also continued his recent hot streak by bagging 125,000.

Overall 251 players made it through, and they'll be joined on Saturday's Day 2 by any player who wishes to enter or use the one allotted reentry to return to the tournament. Players can register up until the 12:30 p.m. start of play, and there will surely be more who wish to take a crack at this burgeoning prize pool.

Meijer van Putten Knocks Out Saout

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Jasper Meijer van Putten
Jasper Meijer van Putten

After a raise and several callers, Antoine Saout shoved all in for 15,600. Jasper Meijer van Putten called to his direct left, and Jake Cody called a few seats over as well.

The two active players checked the {3-Spades}{8-Clubs}{6-Spades} flop. On the {7-Clubs} turn, Meijer van Putten bet 22,000 and Cody called. On the {K-Spades} river, the EPT13 Prague winner bet 48,000, and the Team PokerStars Pro folded.

Meijer van Putten showed {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} for top set, Saout briefly flashed an unknown hand and headed for the rail.

Riess Bluffs Off to Luca

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Ryan Riess
Ryan Riess

Ivan Luca checked and was facing a bet of 9,000 from Ryan Riess on a board of {10-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{q-Spades}. Luca was in the cutoff and used a time extension but then called. He checked the {9-Spades} river and Riess bet 25,000. It looked like enough to put Luca all in, or very close. The Argentinian decided to call it off.

Riess tabled {7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for an airball, and Luca showed {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}.

O'Dwyer Doubles Through Stuer in Four-Bet Pot

Level 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Steve O'Dwyer
Steve O'Dwyer

Steve O'Dwyer opened on the button and Julian Stuer three-bet in the small blind to 6,600. O'Dwyer came back with 13,000, and Stuer called. The flop came {8-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{4-Hearts}, and Stuer led out for 5,100. O'Dwyer called without much thought. On the {6-Diamonds} turn, Stuer checked and called 11,000. The German then checked the {5-Spades} and O'Dwyer wasted little time before pushing all in. It was 18,400, and Stuer called before his timer ran down.

O'Dwyer opened {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}, and Stuer mucked {q-Clubs}{j-Clubs}.

Peters Doubles

Level 6 : 300/600, 100 ante
David_Peters
David_Peters

David Peters was in a blind battle from the small blind and check-called 6,700 on a {2-Clubs}{3-Spades}{8-Diamonds} flop. He check-called a further 10,500 on the {k-Spades} turn, waiting until he almost ran out of time for the second straight street. On the {9-Spades} river, he checked again. His opponent moved all in to put Peters at risk for 18,675, and the American high roller called.

The big blind showed {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}, but Peters held {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts} for the nut one pair hand to double.

Sontheimer Massively Coolers Roy

Level 5 : 250/500, 75 ante
Steffen Sontheimer
Steffen Sontheimer

With 23,000 in the pot and the board completed at {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{6-Clubs}, all the chips flew in the middle between Steffen Sontheimer and Jonathan Roy. It was Sontheimer who was all in for 53,850 and Roy who had him barely covered.

Steffen Sontheimer: {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}
Jonathan Roy: {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs}

Roy's jacks full was crushed by Sontheimers quads, which left the Canadian with 6,000 when the dust had settled.

World Champions Locking Horns

Level 3 : 150/300, 50 ante
Ryan Riess and Martin Jacobson
Ryan Riess and Martin Jacobson

Over at Table 6, 2013 World Champion Ryan Riess and 2014 World Champion Martin Jacobson are seated together. The two former champions directly locked horns on a {4-Clubs}{3-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{K-Spades} board.

With around 3,700 in the pot, Martin Jacobson had 4,000 in front of him. Ryan Riess, who was out of position, had raised to 13,800, and Jacobson folded after some thought, allowing Riess to deliver the first jab.

Welcome to Day 1 of PokerStars Championship Barcelona €10,300 High Roller

PokerStars Championship Barcelona is ready to start winding down soon after over a week of exciting poker, but before the tents can be folded up, there's one last big event to play out: €10,300 High Roller.

That event starts today, with cards scheduled to fly at 12:30 p.m. local time in Casino Barcelona.

Last year under the EPT banner, Connor Drinan emerged as champion over a field of 591 entries, conquering the likes of Patrick Leonard, Ari Engel, Joseph Cheong and Oleksii Khoroshenin, all of whom made the final table. Drinan claimed a massive €849,200 first-place prize, and a similarly monstrous turnout and prize pool is expected again this year.

Before the tournament can reach that point this year, the minutiae of Day 1 must take place. That means 10 levels, each lasting one hour. Players get 50,000 in starting chips at miniscule blinds of just 100/200/25 to start, working their way to 800/1,600/200. Should something go awry — a sick cooler, a bluff gone wrong, or an unfortunate river card — players do get one mulligan in this one, having the option to reenter once.

Keep an eye out here on PokerNews as we bring you all of the live updates.
