The Croc Takes a Bite Out of Obst

"The Croc"
"The Croc"
Hold'em:

Under the gun, James Obst raised, and Billy "The Croc" Argryos came along to see the flop.

It showed up {3-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} {9-Diamonds}. Obst bet, Argyros raised, and Obst called.

The turn was the {7-Clubs}, and Obst check-called a bet.

Fifth street brought the {A-Hearts}. Obst checked, Argyros bet, and Obst went into the tank. "You got jack-ten?" he asked.

"Jack-ten?! Nope, ace-queen," said Argyros. After a couple minutes, Obst put in the call, and The Croc did indeed turn over {A-Spades} {Q-Spades}, picking up a nice little pot with his two pair.

Hachem Chopped Up

Stud 8/b:

We pick up the hand on fifth street with three-handed action.

Argyros: (X-X) {A-Hearts} {4-Hearts} {5-Clubs}
Obst: (X-X) {3-Hearts} {7-Spades} {J-Diamonds}
Hachem: (X-X) {3-Spades} {4-Diamonds} {A-Clubs}

On fifth, Billy Argryos leads out with a bet, and both Obst and Hachem call.

On sixth street, Obst picks up a pair on board with the {7-Clubs}. He checks, and Hachem bets his {6-Spades}. Argyros picks up the {8-Clubs}, and he raises. Obst calls, and Hachem tanks for a minute before calling as well.

On seventh street, all three men check. The hands are shown down:

Argyros: {A-Hearts} {4-Hearts} {5-Clubs} {8-Clubs} ({Q-Clubs} {2-Spades} {8-Diamonds})
Obst: {3-Hearts} {7-Spades} {J-Diamonds} {7-Clubs} ({10-Clubs} {10-Diamonds} {8-?})
Hachem: {3-Spades} {4-Diamonds} {A-Clubs} {6-Spades} ({J-Hearts} {J-Spades} {Q-Hearts})

Obst wins the high half with his two pair, tens over sevens. Argyros wins the low half with the eighty-five low, and Hachem is left with just 2,900 chips.

Funny Money

The table is in good spirits, as this event is playing more like a casual home game than a serious high-stakes tournament. Truth be told though, it's not as "high-stakes" as it would have been this time last year. The latest conversation on the felt revolved around the economy and the exchange rate. With the Australian dollar trading poorly on the currency markets, this buy-in represents just less than USD $7,100.

Tony G Hard to Beat

Stud 8/b

Tony G is charged with the bring in, showing the {5-Diamonds}. Joe Hachem completes with the {Q-Diamonds} and Van Marcus comes along with the {6-Diamonds}.

On 4th Street, Hachem bets his {7-Spades}, Marcus folds and Tony G calls with the {7-Spades}.

5th Street is checked by both players with the {6-Spades} for Hachem and the {6-Hearts} for Guoga.

6th Street gives Tony the {2-Diamonds} and he bets his pair. Hachem calls with the {5-Clubs}, making three cards to a low and straight.

Guoga then leads out with a bet on 7th street and Hachem calls. At the showdown, Guoga shows trip deuces and no low with Hachem folding, saying, "You're hard to beat today, Tony."

Tony G is now over 15,000 and Hachem is down to 6,000.

Just a Boy

James Obst
James Obst
With a table full of well-known poker players in our event, the big story revolves around young gun James Obst. Obst made a name for himself playing in highest stakes online games, before PokerStars learned that he was just 16 years old. Banned from the site until he turned 18 (just recently), Obst picked up right where he left off, winning a WCOOP event under the name Andy McLEOD. Obst also captured an FTOPS Razz event, playing as TheFatFISH. A true standout at all games, Obst is right at home playing a High Stakes tournament with some of the best players in the world.

Razz Action

Razz:

Van Marcus was the bring-in with the {J-Hearts}. Tony G completed to 200 with the {6-Hearts}, and Mark Vos raised to 400 showing the {2-Hearts}. Marcus ducked out, and Guoga made the call.

On fourth street, Guoga picked up the {K-Diamonds} and checked. Vos bet his {Q-Diamonds}, and Guoga called.

Fifth street brought Guoga the {4-Spades}, and he again checked. Vos bet the {4-Clubs}, and Guoga called.

Sixth street was the {10-Spades} for Guoga, and he led out with a bet as Vos picked up the {K-Clubs}. Vos called.

On seventh street, Guoga bet, Vos raised, and Guoga called. Vos showed {2-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds} {4-Clubs} {K-Clubs} ({A-Clubs} {J-Clubs} {3-Spades}) and won the pot with his jack-four low.

Vos Draws First Blood

Hold'em:

Under the gun, James Obst raised, and Mark Vos three-bet it from the cutoff. After Obst called, he and Vos went to the flop heads up.

It came {J-Clubs} {5-Hearts} {6-Clubs}, and Obst check-called a bet.

The turn was the {A-Diamonds}. Obst again checked, Vos bet 400, and Obst let it go.

Big Stakes

Local cash game player Ralph Burd just stopped by the table to poke fun at the players. "I've got more money on the table than the whole prizepool," he jested, drawing a laugh from the players. Indeed, Burd is part of a high-stakes cash game that is being set up to run near our tournament table.
