The UTG player opened the pot for 750, Sarah Bilney reraised to 2,250 from the small blind and the UTG player called. The flop was {K-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} and both players checked. The turn was the {Q-Spades}. Bilney bet 2,000, the UTG player raised to 5,000, Bilney reraised to 12,000 and her opponent called all in. Bilney turned up K-K for a set of kings, while the UTG player showed {Q-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for a pair and a flush draw. The river was the {5-Hearts}, making Bilney kings full and she raked in the pot, increasing her stack to 35,000.

Half the Field on Break

Due to the sheer size of the field, the tournament staff has decided to send half of the field on break at a time. The first half is enjoying their break now, while the second half will get their chance in a few minutes.

The Bad Beat Tales Begin

Breaks during poker tournaments are when players take the opportunity to use the bathroom, smoke a cigarette, and call their loved ones. Players also like to gather in circles and recall their bad beat stories from the previous level. I just overhead four sordid tales of big pocket pairs succumbing to inferior hands.

It doesn't matter if the tournaments are in Las Vegas, Monte Carlo, Barcelona, London, or Melbourne... players are always commiserating over their bad beat stories.

Ali Khalil Elimianted

On an 8-6-2 flop, John Gilmore bet 1,500, Ali Khalil raised to 5,000, and Gilmore called. The turn was a four. Gilmore checked, Khalil moved all in for 11,000, and Gilmore insta-called. Gilmore turned up Q-Q, while Khalil held 2-2 for a set. The river, though, was another queen, making Gilmore a higher set and eliminating Khalil.

Sherif Derias Eliminated

On a flop of {9-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{3-Hearts} Sherif Derias checked from the small blind, Jason Giuliano bet 1,200 from UTG, Derias moved all in for 5,900 and Giuliano called. Derias turned up {2-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} for bottom pair while Giuliano tabled {4-Spades}{5-Spades} for an open-ended straight draw. The turn was the {Q-Diamonds}, and Giuliano spiked the {4-Hearts} on the river to win the pot and eliminate Derias.

Emad Tahtouh pushed the remainder of his short stack in on a flop of 8-5-4, holding A-4, and was called by Peng Khoo, who held K-5. Another five on the turn sealed it for Khoo and Tahtouh was eliminated.

Team APL
The Australian Poker League (APL) has sent over 35 entries to this tournament, via their national tournament series. In somewhat of an anomaly in the random seating generator, they have all been seated on the same tables.

We caught up with APL co-founder Martin Martinez just before the start of play today. Stay tuned to our PokerNews Video Gallery to view all the action and antics from the floor of the Crown Poker Room.
