Event #1: $50K GTD Sunday Special

Day 1 Completed

Congratulations to "pure_reason", Winner of the $50,000 Guaranteed Opening Event!

The first event of the latest partypoker US Network Series is in the books after over eight hours of play, and after a late final table surge, "pure_reason" made a nice comeback, defeating Yong “ReadYrSoul” Kwon heads up. "pure_reason" took home $12,161.50 for his finish, giving him a nice bankroll boost before the rest of the series plays out this week.

Kwon started the final table with a nice chip lead, and he would not lose that marker until the second to last hand of the tournament. Kwon would sit back and relax for the first two eliminations, but after that, he would take the reins, scoring the next two knockouts.

The first KO for Kwon saw him knockout “upayformypennys” in sixth place, when Kwon’s pocket kings would best the sevens of “upayformypennys.” Just a few hands later, Kwon would knock out James “Bagels” Lillis. Kwon was aggressive the whole board, and Lillis would end up looking him up on the river with just one pair, but it was no good against the two pair of Kwon.

From there, it was "pure_reason" who would take over, scoring every upcoming elimination. First, he eliminated "stickybuns" when his Ace-Queen held against his opponent's King-Queen.

Then, "pure_reason" scored a wild knockout when he spiked a one outer on the turn against "Gohednpopoff." However, he was still well behind Kwon as the two got to heads up play.

"pure_reason" would close the gap, and then suddenly, the tournament was over in back-to-back hands. First, he would double up with pocket aces against the sevens of Kwon, and then on the next hand, he would win a massive coin flip to secure the title.

Yong “IReadYrSoul” Kwon Eliminated in 2nd Place ($8,398)

Blinds: 90,000/180,000

In a matter of just two hands, "pure_reason" went from short stack to winner of this event! Right after that last hand where "pure_reason" doubled up, the two players once again got in a raising war that saw all of Yong “IReadYrSoul” Kwon's chips get into the middle. Kwon held {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}, and he was flipping against the {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts} of "pure_reason."

The board ran down {q-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{9-Clubs}, and in a flash, the tournament was over! Kwon will have to settle for the second place prize of $8,398, but first place belongs to "pure_reason", who will take home $12,161.50 for his efforts.

Stay tuned for a full recap to be posted shortly.

"pure_reason" Doubles Into the Chip Lead

Blinds: 90,000/180,000

Yong “IReadYrSoul” Kwon raised to 360,000, and "pure_reason" reraised to over a million. Kwon would four bet shove all in, and "pure_reason" quickly called with the best hand in hold'em, {a-Hearts}{a-Spades}. He was well out in front of the {7-Diamonds}{7-Spades} of Kwon, and the aces would hold on the runout of {k-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{k-Spades}.

With that pot, "pure_reason" takes the chip lead for the first time at the final table.

"Gohednpopoff" Eliminated in 3rd Place ($5,980)

Blinds: 80,000/160,000

"pure_reason" looked to be in great shape to get us to heads up, as he had put "Gohednpopoff" at risk in dominating fashion, holding pocket jacks to the {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades} of "Gohednpopoff." However, the flop of {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{5-Spades} quickly flipped the script. Just as quickly as the ace came though, the case jack came on the turn, suddenly giving the lead back to "pure_reason."

Only an ace would change things now, but anotehr queen came instead, giving "pure_reason" a full house.

Kwon Takes Stranglehold with Flush

Blinds: 80,000/160,000

It has been a dream final table for Yong “IReadYrSoul” Kwon, who has yet to take a wrong step so far. In the latest hand, Kwon was heads up with fellow big stack "pure_reason" on a flop of {j-Spades}{7-Spades}{4-Spades}. Kwon checked to "pure_reason", who bet out 400,000 and change. Kwon check raised to 1,100,000, "pure_reason" called, and the {j-Diamonds} hit the turn. Kwon led for 1.3 mllion this time, "pure_reason" called again, and the {5-Hearts} hit the river.

Kwon went for a massive, near pot sized bet of 5.5 million, and "pure_reason" beat him into the pot. However, he was forced to muck after Kwon showed {a-Spades}{8-Spades} for a flopped flush.

With that pot, Kwon practically has one hand on the proverbial trophy.

"stickybuns" Eliminated in 4th Place ($4,940)

Blinds: 70,000/140,000

After a raise from "pure_reason", "stickybuns" moved all in for his final two million and change. "pure_reason" called with {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}, and he was in great shape to score the knockout, as "stickybuns" held a dominated {k-Hearts}{q-Spades}.

The board came down {j-Spades}{7-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{2-Spades}, and the ace high held to get us down to just three players.

James ‘Bagels’ Lillis Eliminated in 5th Place ($4,225)

Blinds: 70,000/140,000

Catching up with the action on the turn of a board reading {k-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}, chip leader Yong "IReadYrSoul" Kwon bet out 1,050,023. James ‘Bagels’ Lillis called, and the {4-Diamonds} completed the board. With about 3.7 million already in the middle, Kwon bet enough, 2.2 million and change, to put Lillis all in. He would call with {q-Spades}{10-Hearts}, but it was no good, as Kwon showed {k-Diamonds}{2-Spades} for a winning two pair.

This leaves just four players, with Kwon still holding a big lead.

”upayformypennys” Eliminated in 6th Place ($3,575)

Blinds: 60,000/120,000

”upayformypennys” raised to 300,000, and next to act, big stack Yong "IReadYrSoul" Kwon rereaised to 900,000. It folded back to ”upayformypennys”, and he moved all in for his final 3.7 million. Kwon snap called with {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}, and he was crushing the two red sevens of ”upayformypennys."

The board came down {q-Spades}{3-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{j-Spades}{a-Hearts}, and the kings held to strengthen Kwon's already lengthy chip lead.

Michael “IIIIIIIIIIIII” Haberman Doubles, Then Gets Eliminated

Michael Haberman
Michael Haberman

Blinds: 60,000/120,000

Michael “IIIIIIIIIIIII” Haberman was down to just a few big blinds when he shoved all in with {a-Spades}{2-Spades}. He was dominated by the pocket eights of "Gohednpopoff", but an ace on the flop, and another one on the turn scored a double up for Haberman.

His success was short lived however, as he would bust just two hands later, with "Gohednpopoff" getting revenge, and scoring the knockout of his short stacked opponent.
