Mattern of Fact

A player in middle position limped for 300 before Arnaud Mattern made it 1,050 to play from the button. The blinds folded but the limper made the call before the flop came {6-Clubs} {2-Hearts} {7-Diamonds}.

Both players checked so it was straight to the turn {K-Diamonds}. The middle position player decided to bet this time for a total of 1,500 and Mattern called before the river came {5-Hearts}.

Very quickly the middle-position player counted out a bet, this time for a total of 3,000. Mattern looked at his opponent and made the call. His {K-Spades} {4-Spades} was enough to beat his opponent's bluff attempt with {A-Hearts} {10-Diamonds}.

Mattern is moving along nicely with 38,500.

Flushy's Flush

The flop was out and looked like {5-Hearts} {8-Spades} {4-Clubs}. Three players still had cards and one of those was James Dempsey who bet 900 when it was checked to him on the button. Both his opponents called so the turn was dealt as {3-Hearts}.

This time a player in middle position bet 1,000 and only Dempsey called before the river came {7-Hearts}. Once more the player in middle position led out for a 1,000 bet but Dempsey raised to 10,000 that time, enough to put his opponent all in.

His opponent snap-called and showed an eight but it was no good against Dempsey's {K-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} for a flush.

Dempsey up to 32,000 now.

Jack High No Good?

We pick up the action on the river in a hand between Gus Hansen and one other player at his table. The board reads {4-Hearts} {5-Hearts} {2-Spades} {A-Hearts} {Q-Spades} and there are more than 8,000 chips in the middle of the table. Action is on Gus, and he takes his time mulling over his options. As he likes to do, he bets the full rainbow -- one chip of each color, equaling 6,625. His opponent cuts out calling chips and puts them into the pot, drawing a big sigh from Gus.

"I think I have absolutely no chance of winning this pot," he said sheepishly. He turned over the {J-Hearts}, saying, "I think I have a jack. If you can beat a jack, you win," He also showed the {10-Spades}. His opponent flipped over {A-Clubs} {2-Clubs}, and his two pair does indeed beat Hansen's jack high. He pulled in a nice little pot, dropping Hansen back down the totem pole a bit -- now sitting with 64,000.

'Are you lonesome tonight?'

Julie Donnaz
Julie Donnaz
Mademoiselle Julie Donnaz was the only woman to register for today's Day 1a starting field. She is still alive and well in the tournament and currently sits with 45,000 in chips.

Scotty Nguyen even stopped by to greet Donnaz personally, saying, "Show them how to play some poker, alright baby!"

Of note is the fact that this is Donnaz's very first time playing live poker. In fact, she has never even held poker chips before. In an interview with a French television crew, she mentioned that she is familiar enough with the game, but has only ever played with dry pasta.
