Player Profile: Max Stern
PokerStars qualifier Max Stern has been steadily building his stack throughout the day here on Day 2 at the 2011 PokerStars.net LAPT Punta del Este Main Event. The money bubble is approaching and Stern has so far built his stack to 145,000 or so from where he began the day at 42,500.
What many people don't know about Stern is that he is a doctor, a pediatrician to be exact. Beyond that, Stern holds three World Series of Poker gold bracelets. He won one in 1995 in the $1,500 Omaha 8-or-Better event and then two in 1997 in the $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em and $2,500 Seven-Card Stud Split events. He has 10 other WSOP final tables to his name and just shy of $1.5 million in career tournament winnings.
It's fitting that one of Stern's bracelets came from a stud variant as he co-authored the book Championship Stud with WSOP Main Event winner Tom McEvoy and Linda Johnson.
His wife, Maria Stern, also has a WSOP gold bracelet. Her victory came in 1997 in the $1,500 Seven-Card Stud event, making for three gold bracelets from the couple in total that year. They are the second married couple to ever win a gold bracelet each.
