Marathon day comes to an end
What a day. Yesterday was a nice relaxed stroll through eight levels of play but today was a completely different poker animal. The aim was to reach 24 players through hell or high water. In the end it took nearly 12 levels to whittle down to the required number. There was agony and heartache along the way for many and stamina was tested. Players had to wait to the end of level eight (yesterday’s entire day) before they were allowed to break for dinner. The player who coped best with this to end the day as chip leader was Amer Sulaimanon on 801,000. He's followed by Jose Barbero on 646000 and Chris Conradon 576,000.
We came back today with 197 players and all of them had the same goal to start with; make the money. That would mean getting to 48th place. Those who failed to make it to this point were Carter Gill, Michael Piper, Maria Mayrinck, Pascal Perrault and Diego Silva. It took until the 10th level of the day before the bubble burst and the unfortunate soul was Pham Duyen. He couldn't win a race against Jorge Schwalb and had to exit to raucous cheers from his opponent’s supporters on the nearby rail.
From there on it was a mad rush to 24 players as all the hangers on started to shove. Some got back in it, most busted. David Figueroa nearly created the story of the day after two amazing comebacks. He was down to fumes a few hours ago but recovered and was then down to less than a big blind on the bubble. He managed to double-up, quadruple-up and then double-up once more to make it into the money but he faltered once more and was eliminated. Another nice story today was husband and wife team Mauricio Zeman and Pamela Espinosa who both made it into the money and were eliminated within minutes of each other in 31st and 30th.
Our three tables of 24 players will be back tomorrow at midday where we will play down to a final table of eight. Two former LAPT champions in Amer Sulaiman and Jose Barbero will be aiming to make history but they will have to battle their way past 22 hungry players if that’s to happen. It’s good night from Lima, we hope you can join us again tomorrow for the business end of the tournament.
