Kurganov Soars Clear of the Field After Busting Newey

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Defending champion, Igor Kurganov, has stretched further clear at the top after scooping a huge pot off Paul Newey.

The pot was being passed to Kurganov and he recounted most of the hand to PokerNews. On the {10-Spades}{8-Spades}{3-Spades} flop, Newey check-called a bet before he led for 13,500 on the {10-Hearts} turn. Kurganov raised this up to 27,000 and called when Newey three-bet to 68,000.

The river fell as the {6-Spades} and Newey shoved for his remaining 75,000 with {a-Spades}{j-Spades} for the nut flush. Kurganov had bad news though as he opened {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for a full house. Ouch.

A Better Pair for Heitmann

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

From under the gun, Jason Wheeler raised to 2,300. Jan Heitmann reraised from the next seat to 5,800, and action folded back to Wheeler. He made the call, and the flop came down {9-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{4-Spades}.

On the flop, Wheeler checked, and Heitmann checked behind. The turn was the {Q-Clubs}, and both players checked again. The river completed the board with the {5-Clubs}, and Wheeler led for 7,000. Heitmann called.

Wheeler showed the {J-Hearts}{9-Hearts}, and Heitmann showed the {Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}.

Ivey Snap Doubles with Second Bullet

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Phil Ivey is in no mood to hang around with his second bullet, just ask Govert Metaal.

The action folded to Ivey on the button and he raised to 2,500. Metaal was in the big blind and three-bet to 7,500. Ivey paused for a minute and moved all in for 54,000. Metaal snap called causing Ivey to smile.

Metaal: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}
Ivey: {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}

The board ran {5-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{8-Spades}{9-Clubs} to make Ivey a full house. The mood at his table instantly shifted down a notch or two.

Cheong Over 200K

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Kyle Cheong made it 2,200 from under the gun, and Lorent Polito, winner of the EPT Barcelona €10,000 High Roller this season, called on the button. Fabian Quoss three-bet to 8,000 from the small blind, Cheong called, and Polito folded.

The flop came down {K-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{2-Diamonds}, and Quoss bet 10,000. Cheong called, and the dealer added the {5-Spades} on the turn. Quoss led again, this time for 23,000. Cheong took his time, then called.

On the {8-Diamonds} river, Quoss checked. Cheong studied, then fired 35,500. Quoss gave it up, and Cheong won the pot.

Stern Busts; Gruissem Over 100K

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Dani Stern was all in preflop against Philipp Gruissem and Jan Heitman before the {Q-Spades}{7-Clubs}{5-Spades} flop. There was about 25,000 in the middle on the flop for the main pot and 20,000 in the side pot for Gruissem and Heitmann to fight over.

After checking the flop, Gruissem and Heitmann also checked the {5-Diamonds} turn and {J-Hearts} river. Gruissem showed the {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}, which was good enough to beat Heitmann's {A-Hearts}{K-Clubs} for the side pot. It was also good enough to beat Stern's {A-Spades}{K-Spades} for the main pot and eliminate him.
