Andrei Konopelko Leads EPT Barcelona Going Into Day 4

Level 19 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Andrei Konopelko
Andrei Konopelko

Day 3 of the PokerStars European Poker Tour Barcelona Main Event started with 292 players still in contention for that illustrious 100th EPT title and €1,261,000 first-place prize. With just payouts reserved for 239 players, 53 players would not only fall short of the accolades, but also of any cash at all.

Mizrachi, first to go
Day 1a chip leader Michael Mizrachi was the first to get all the big hopes out of his head. In the first hand of the day, he saw his hopes for an even more impressive curriculum vitae squashed when his aces got cracked by nines. The nine on the river hurt, and Mizrachi was the first sent to the rail on the third day of play.

Many more would follow before bubble time was there. Canadian EPT regular Yann Dion ran his ace-queen into ace-king, Dutch sit-n-go expert Martijn Ardon saw a big bluff fail against Timo Pfutzenreuter, and Angel Guillen and Olof Haglund didn't make any dough, either.

It didn't even take all that long before the clock was paused and the hand-for-hand process started. The bubble boy was set to not go home empty handed though, as the organization had a Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open Main Event ticket worth $5,300 and custom-made electric guitar ready for the unfortunate soul to bust last before any loot was paid out.

Bubble pandemonium
What followed can only be described as a pandemonium. In a remarkable turn of events, the tournament saw six all-in situations at once, which led to some serious complications for the bubble and the tournament.

On the first table, Francois-Charles Scapula and Daniel Studer were all in and at risk against former World Series of Poker November Niner Sylvain Loosli, who called covering both players.

Scapula had the {Q-Spades}{J-Clubs}, Studer the {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}, and Loosli the {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}. The board came {J-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{A-Spades}{7-Clubs}, allowing for Loosli to win the pot and eliminate both short stacks, but this is where things got interesting. There was some confusion as to who was the shortest of the two stacks, but it was eventually confirmed that Scapula had just 1,000 more than Studer.

On the next table to run out an all-in hand, Farid Chati was all in on an {A-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Spades}{J-Spades} board against former EPT winner Martin Finger. Chati turned over the {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts} for a king-high flush, but Finger flipped over the {5-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for a straight flush to the astonishment from all surrounding the table. That meant after two of the six showdowns, three players had been eliminated.

The third table saw Randal Flowers all in with the {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}. His mood had been brightened by the fact that several players had already been knocked out, guaranteeing the American some sort of prize. Philippe D'Auteuil was the one who had made the call with his {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}. The flop came {K-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{9-Hearts}, and Flowers said, "I'll take two hearts," but the turn was the {2-Spades} and the river was the {3-Spades}. That meant a fourth elimination was confirmed, with more all-in situations to play out.

The next two all-in hands — both on different tables — saw double ups for the short stacks, leaving just one more to go. Pawel Brzeski had put Richard Dubini at risk and Dubini called it off, but he had an agonizing wait while all of the other hands played out. Eventually, he was able to turn his cards over and see what he was up against, and when that time came he saw his {q-Hearts}{q-Spades} against the {k-Spades}{k-Clubs} for Brzeski. The final board was {a-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} and Dubini joined the other players eliminated on the bubble.

Five players were eliminated on the bubble, but with two of them coming from the same table, it's a very unique situation as to who would get what. The bubble was to receive a guitar and $5,300 seat in the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open $10,000,000 guaranteed event in Florida this week, so the tournament staff was left to sort out the mess.

It was decided that the five players would take the money from the first four in-the-money spots (€8,050 times four for €32,200) and divide it evenly amongst them, taking €6,440 each. Then the five would play a sit & go for the guitar and the $5,300 seat. This ruling raised some questions because it was ignoring the "bigger chip stack" rule that applies to situations in which two players bust from the table on the bubble or in the money.

In the end Francois-Charles Scapula from France beat Randal Flowers heads up to grab the guitar and the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open ticket on top of his €6,440 prize - effectively making him more than many of the players that busted after him. The Frenchman was undecided if he was to travel to Florida to play in the event, or that he would try to sell it.

Remko Rinkema talked to Live Events specialist Neil Johnson about the unique situation:

Bust outs
As usual, many players quickly busted after the bubble had burst. Niall "firaldo" Farrell, who won the FTOPS Main Event for $236,000 back in April, was one of the first to hit the payout desk que. He was getting in line behind the likes of Thomas Brader, Timo Pfutzenreuter, and David Peters, though, but all got the €8,050 min-cash for their efforts.

Ole Schemion , Martin Jacobson, Paul Vas Nunes, former EPT Barcelona winner Kent Lundmark, and former Team Pro Maxim Lykov did just slightly better, getting €8,500 for making it a tiny bit deeper.

Characters like Kitty Kuo (ace-queen into kings), Dan Shak (top pair and flush draw missed against turned flush), and a furious Sergey Frizyak (the dealer open mucked someones hand, but it was correctly ruled live anyway) also left the stage before the fifth 90-level for the day was in the books.

Surging
Where people fall, other people surge - as usual in a poker tournament. This biggest EPT on European soil event was no different. EPT Prague winner Martin Finger was one of 'em, gaining lots of chips on the bubble, and winning a big hand with... {K-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}. After calling a four bet with that potential monster, he got his opponent to put in all of his chips in betting a king high flop and turn with pocket tens.

EPT Berlin winner Davidi Kitai also had a day full of prosperity. Where the Belgian bracelet winner might not perse be known for his small ball steady grind, he today showed he was very much capable of an approach like that as well. After emptying the clip in a hand early on, where his river shove wasn't called - so we don't know if he had it or not, he mostly played small pots to get to 1.2 million.

Finger and Kitai aren't the only former EPT champs still in, though the quest to become a two-time winner has lost its glance after Vicky Coren became the first one to do it in last seasons EPT Sanremo event. EPT London winner Robin Ylitalo (338,000), EPT Barcelona winner Mikalai Pobal (163,000), Mike McDonald (495,000) and EPT Tallinn winner Kevin Stani (421,000) is also through to Day 4.

Leading the charge is Andrei Konopelko from Belarus, who gathered 1,451,000 in chips throughout the first 18 levels of the tournament. Piotr Sowinski from Poland is right on his heels with 1,315,000 in chips, and be sure not to forget about German Team PokerStars Pro Jan Heitman with a respectable 953,000 in chips.

Day 4: Main Event and $10,000 High Roller
The tournament continues noon local time August 25th, with the goal for the day being to lose as many players as possible. Last year it was Tom Middleton who lead the final 24 (and eventually win) after Day 4, so the organization will most likely try to get down to as close as possible to that number this year as well.

PokerNews will again be on sight to supply you with all the updates you can wish for, photos from all the players and important moments, and interviews with everyone thats making waves.

The Main Event won't be the only tournament in Barcelona you may expect updates from though, the €10,000 High Roller starts at 1 p.m. local time, and we'll be on board from the get go to see who manoeuvres himself in the best position to succeed Thomas Muehloecker as EPT Barcelona High Roller champion.

Doing the Double, Going for Triple

Scott Seiver
Scott Seiver

Last year, David Benefield and Ole Schemion final tabled the €50,000 Super High Roller, cashed the €5,300 Main Event, and final tabled the €10,300 High Roller at European Poker Tour Barcelona.

This year, Dan Shak has completed two of the same three legs after placing eighth in the Super High Roller and 129th in the Main Event, and so has Scott Seiver. While Shak may have busted, Seiver is still alive in the Main Event following a fourth-place finish in the Super High Roller.

Ryan Fee also cashed the Super High Roller and is alive in the Main Event, but he didn't final table the Super High Roller — he placed 11th.

With the High Roller still to come tomorrow, Seiver and Shak could pull the same triple that Benefield and Schemion did last year, but Seiver won't be ditching his Main Event efforts just to chase that accomplishment. Instead, he'll be gunning for the €1,261,000 top prize in the Main Event.

Dan Shak Collects Second Cash at EPT100; Eliminated in 129th

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Dan Shak
Dan Shak

After making his return to super high roller events in the European Poker Tour Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller and finishing eighth for €138,600, Dan Shak has fallen here in the €5,300 Main Event, scoring a payday of €10,300.

His elimination came thanks to two hands. The first one crippled him, and the second one finished him off. On the first, Shak had opened from under the gun to 14,000. [Removed:146] called on the button, and Raymond Baker called from the big blind before the dealer spread out the {J-Clubs}{9-Spades}{5-Spades} flop. Baker checked, and Shak bet 20,000. Guerfi called, and then Baker came along as well.

The turn was the {Q-Spades}, and Baker led with a bet of 40,000. Shak raised all in for 245,000 rather quickly, and Guerfi got out of the way with a fold. Baker shrugged and called, putting himself at risk for 237,000 total.

Shak had the {K-Spades}{Q-Hearts} for top pair and a flush draw. Baker had the {8-Spades}{7-Spades} for a flush.

"Just not the six of spades," said Shak, noting that the {6-Spades} would give Baker a straight flush.

The river completed the board with the {10-Diamonds}, and that kept Baker's hand in the lead. He won the pot, doubled through, and left Shak with just 8,000 in chips.

On the very next hand, Shak was forced to post 1,000 for the ante and 6,000 for the big blind, leaving himself with just 1,000 behind to start the hand. Guerfi opened to 15,000 from the cutoff seat, and everyone folded over to Shak. He wasn't about to fold, and tossed in his last 1,000 before turning up the {8-Spades}{5-Clubs}. Guerfi had the {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}.

The flop, turn, and river ran out {Q-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{8-Hearts} to leave Shak drawing dead on the turn. He said his goodbyes and was off to the payout desk to collect his winnings. Guerfi was left on about 470,000 in chips.

Panka Triples With Queens

Level 18 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Dominik Panka
Dominik Panka

Vincent Rubianes opened under the gun, and Dominik Panka in the cutoff shoved all in for his remaining 125,000 chips. Egidijus Dovidaitis cold called from the small blind, and wasn't sure what to do after Rubianes over shoved. After some thinking, the Lithuanian folded, claiming to lay down ace-king.

Vincent Rubianes: {J-Spades}{J-Hearts}
Dominik Panka: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}

The {Q-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{7-Clubs} was very good for Panka, and the {9-Spades} on the turn made his double up official. The {9-Hearts} did nothing but give Rubianes an irrelevant lower full house.

The $1.75 Million Bubble

Heard the one about the $1.75 million bubble? The five players who busted out of the Main Event played a sit and go for a $5,300 seat to the Semionle Hard Rock Poker Open, a tournament that awarded $1.75 million to the winner last year. The PokerStars Blog had a front row seat as it played out.

Bubble Carnage as Six All-In Hands Deliver Multiple Exits

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

A remarkable turn of events as six all-in situations led to some serious complications for the bubble and the tournament.

Philippe D'Auteuil was the one who had made the call his {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}.

As it stands, five players were eliminated on the bubble, but with two of them coming from the same table, it's a very unique situation as to who would get what.

Then the five will be play a sit-n-go for the guitar and the $5,300 seat. This ruling has raised a bit of question because it is ignoring the "bigger chip stack" rule that applies to situations in which two players bust from the table table on the bubble or in the money. Accordingly to the rule, the player with the largest stack would receive the highest finishing position.

The Bubble Gets A Guitar (and a $5,300 Ticket to the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open)

Level 16 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

Of the 1,496 players who signed up only 239 will finish in the money, leaving the remainder to reflect somberly on a first near-miss of the season, to the cheers of those left behind.

But it might not be such bitter blow for the bubble boy this time around as there's a consolation treat in store, which may strike a soothing chord (that's a pun which will become obvious in just a second).

The bubble boy today will not in fact leave empty handed, but will instead receive a custom guitar courtesy of the Seminole Hard Rock in Florida which this month stages their Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open with a $10m guarantee, all in association with PokerStars.

This will be something of a special event, beamed live from Ft Lauderdale by the team behind EPTLive, who'll be heading on a road trip across the pond of sorts to bring their award winning coverage to poker fans around the world.

But the organisers generosity extends beyond a few strings to pluck. The bubble player today will also receive a seat in this Seminole event, a ticket worth $5,300 and a short that that enormous prize pool. In fact, it's been scientifically proven* that the best cure for bubbling an EPT is to win a very big prize next time round in a tournament you got into for free.

You can find out more about the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open here, including how you too can play. For now we await the identity of the EPTs unofficial envoy. It kicks off on August 28 with the first of three starting days. Watch it all on EPTLive.

Olof Haglund Eliminated

Olof Haglund
Olof Haglund

2013 EPT London's third place finisher (£427,564) Olof Haglund has just been eliminated.

When we arrived at his table, he already had all of his chips in the middle from the small blind. The decision was on Italian player [Removed:40] who needed to add 35,000, with already a total pot of 24,000.

After minutes of thinking, Vitagliano made the call. Haglund had {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}, and saw Vitagliano show {A-Clubs}{9-Clubs}.

Though Haglund was in front, he got up from his seat like he already knew what was coming.

And indeed, the {A-Hearts}{9-Spades}{5-Diamonds} was terrible for Haglund. The {Q-Hearts} on the turn gave Haglund some recovering outs, but the {10-Spades} on the river was a blank and Haglund made his exit.

Pfutzenreuter Busts Ardon

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Timo Pfützenreuter
Timo Pfützenreuter

We missed the precise pre flop action, but we're pretty sure that Pfutzenreuter had opened from the hijack, and Martijn Ardon had three bet from the big blind. Pfutzenreuter then called, and they saw a flop heads up.

We picked up the action here, and saw Ardon bet out 16,500 on {K-Spades}{10-Clubs}{5-Hearts}. Pfutzenreuter made the call pretty quickly.

The turn came the {J-Diamonds} and Ardon checked. Pfutzenreuter checked behind, and the river came the {7-Spades}.

Ardon: "All in"
Pfutzenreuter: "Call"

It all went so quick.

Ardon rolled his eyes a little when he saw how fast his opponent called his shove. Ardon tabled {Q-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for not much of anything, and Pfutzenreuter showed {A-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} for the nuts.

The dealer counted Pfutzenreuter's stack first (82,500), but despite having a whole lot of (small denomination) chips, the Dutchman had about 15,000 less than his German opponent and was eliminated.

"Nice hand" said Ardon before he made his way to the rail.

Nima Ahrary started the day second in chips but he's already won more than one large pot, having just eliminated Dario Sammartino in a button versus small blind battle.

Ahrary had {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts} against the Italian's player's {A-Spades}{K-Spades} and the board came {4-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{4-Spades}{10-Clubs} to give the German even more chips. He's now got nearly 300,000 more than Vojtech Ruzicka, the leader at the start of the day.
