The 2024 PokerStars European Poker Tour Barcelona kicked off today with two of the eight opening flights in the PokerStars Estrellas Poker Tour (ESPT) Main Event playing out at the Casino Barcelona. Day 1b drew 199 entries and came to its conclusion at the last second of Level 18 with 30 players advancing to Day 2 and into the money.

France's Sebastien Compte bagged up the biggest stack after he amassed 474,000 chips at the end of play, and was also responsible for bursting the bubble after his pocket kings were too good for the ace-ten of Gerard Rubiralta.

Michel Molenaar managed to bag the third-biggest stack of the flight with 333,000, which puts the Dutchman in a great position once Day 2 gets underway. Molenaar has over $1,200,000 in live tournament earnings according to The Hendon Mob which includes cashes in three European Poker Tour (EPT) final tables.

Spain's Jose Criado was active throughout the day and raked in a healthy pot when his ace-king was too good against the ace-jack of Italy's Mario Laterza. As the day's play ended, Criado bagged up 323,000 chips which was good for sixth on the leaderboard.

Japan's Shiina Okamoto also managed to make it through to Day 2 and finished just outside the top ten with a stack of 249,000, which puts her eleventh in the counts. Okamoto's best finish in an EPT event came two years ago right here in Barcelona where she final table bubbled a €2,100 event.

There are six more starting flights in the Main Event with two taking place on each of the 27th, 28th, and 29th of August. The survivors from all eight flights will combine for the first time on Friday, August 30 to play out Day 2.

Keep it with PokerNews as we continue to bring you all the action as the PokerStars Estrellas Poker Tour Main Event is just getting started.

Grane Hits the Rail One Hand After Eventful Three-Way Chop

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Albert Grane
Albert Grane

Vitalii Zimkovskyi was all in for around 16,000 from middle position and Diogo Da Silva made the call from the hijack. Albert Grane also committed his short stack from the big blind.

Vitalii Zimkovskyi: 44 All in
Albert Grane: A7 All in
Diogo Da Silva: 55

All caught a piece of the 675 flop but Da Silva's set was best and looked good to thin the field down by two. However, Zimkovskyi took the lead on the 3 as he turned a straight, which left Grane drawing dead to a chop. The entire table chuckled as the 4 landed on the river, which meant the three chopped up the chips in the middle.

Grane's tenure in the tournament didn't last another hand, however, as he was all in with K6 and up against the QQ of Fabiano Teixeira. The runout of 45989 didn't help Grane, and he made his way to the exit.

Valls Knocks Out Ardic

Level 5 : Blinds 200/500, 500 ante
Josep Valls
Josep Valls

Josep Valls opened to 1,100 from under the gun and was called by Laurence Stein from the next seat over and Senol Ardic on the button.

The flop came AK8. Valls bet 1,600 and Stein called before Ardic announced that he was all in, pushing forward his remaining stack of roughly 25,000. Valls, who had started the hand with around 45,000, made the call to put Ardic at risk while Stein got out of the way.

Senol Ardic: 54 All in
Josep Valls: K8

Valls was in great shape with two pair against Ardic's flush draw. He remained ahead when the rest of the board ran out 47 and dragged in a massive pot while Ardic made his exit from the tournament area.
