Another Hit for Tony G

Tony G, during Day 1 action
Tony G, during Day 1 action
Tony "G" Guoga was doing an impressive job of rebuilding his shattered stack after running jacks into queens early in the day. Then he wound up putting an opponent all in on a {6-Hearts} {7-Hearts} {K-Clubs} flop with {K-Diamonds} {5-Spades}. His opponent showed the nut flush draw, {A-Hearts} {10-Hearts}. It missed the turn {7-Clubs}, but filled up when the river fell {5-Hearts}. Tony is now quite short, retaining only 16,600 in chips.

Chronis in Reverse

Chris Chronis has once again lost some chips, dropping his stack now to about 125,000, after starting the day with a fair few more chips.

Chronis ran his {A-Spades}{j-Clubs} two pair, into the straight of an opponent, so the other player doubled through and dropped Chronis down the chip counts. He will be looking to reverse this trend.

Don't Break AJ With AJ

Andrew Jeffreys, during Event #1
Andrew Jeffreys, during Event #1
Andrew Jeffreys just recalled a hand to us where he eliminated a short-stacked opponent in emphatic style.

Jeffreys had raised from middle position to 2,100 before a player in the cutoff moved all in for 14,000. The blinds folded and Jeffreys snap-called with {10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}! He had live cards against his opponent's {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} and spiked a pair of tens on the flop which was enough to win the hand.

"Don't try to break AJ with AJ!" laughed Jeffreys as he's now sitting comfortably with 60,000 chips.

A Dose of Grant Levy

Grant Levy
Grant Levy
Grant Levy is among the better-known local players in today's field. It looks like he'll be sticking around for a while. He moved all in for 25,000 on a flop of {6-Spades} {3-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} after his lone opponent led out for 6,000. That opponent made the call with a pair and a flush draw, {6-Diamonds} {7-Diamonds}. Levy turned over a set of threes, then sweated out a blank on the turn (the {4-Hearts}) and a blank on the river (the {10-Hearts}). He doubled up to 55,000, putting him squarely on an average-sized stack.

Just the Nuts

2009 Aussie Millions Poker Championship Event #1 winner, Christian Heich, is among the early chip leaders here on Day 2 of the Main Event thanks to a recent three-way hand. With the flop showing {9-Diamonds} {10-Diamonds} {9-Hearts}, one player moved all in for 11,000. Heich raised to 22,000 and got a call from the player behind him. On the turn {K-Hearts}, Heich stepped it back to 19,000 and was called again. He tried moving all in when the river came {9-Clubs} but couldn't entice his opponent into calling. Why'd he want the call? Because he had flopped a full house with {10-Spades} {9-Spades} and then rivered quads. The pot netted Heich more than 50,000 chips to move him to 156,000.

Rollercoaster Hand as Rahme Rivers Kruger

Raymond Rahme
Raymond Rahme
Raymond Rahme opened preflop, with David Kruger making the call out of the blinds.

On a flop of {7-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} David Kruger fired 2,800 into Raymond Rahme who made the call. The turn {5-Diamonds} saw Kruger check to Rahme who bet out 3,800. Kruger deliberated for a moment before calling. The river brought the {10-Diamonds}, which was a card that Kruger visibly didn't like; Kruger checked to Rahme who bet out 6,800. Kruger begrudgingly made the call expecting Rahme to table a flush.

Rahme tabled {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds} for a flush, and Kruger then opened his {5-Hearts}{5-Spades} for a set of fives. Rahme moves up to 95,000. David Kruger takes a slight hit, down now to 125,000.

"Sick river, bad river card" sighed Kruger as he pushed the river call amount in Rahme's direction.

Nassif Can't Make the Kings Work

Marwan Nassif started the day off well, chipping up early, and was in prime position to move near the very top of the counts when he called the preflop all-in bet of 49,600 made by an opponent. Nassif's opponent had pocket queens, an inferior hand to Nassif's pocket kings. A queen hit the flop, however, to make a set for Nassif's opponent. He never recovered and as a result moved back to join the pack with approximately 55,000 chips.

Rafferty Hits Century

Tom Rafferty is the latest to join the centurion club after collecting a huge pot in a preflop clash.

After Matt Vengrin opened the proceedings with a raise, Rafferty put in the three-bet from the button. The big blind player then moved all in over the top for 30,000 more. Vengrin folded and Rafferty tanked before making the call with {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}. He found himself racing against his opponent's {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}.

The flop was a dry {2-Clubs}{9-Spades}{2-Diamonds} but the {K-Clubs} on the turn paired Rafferty to give him the lead. The river was the {J-Diamonds} and Rafferty is now up to 105,000 as his opponent shook his head and departed the tournament floor.

Short Stack Consolidation

We knew the pace of play would be frantic to start the day, but we didn't realize just how frantic it would be. In just the first 80 minutes of play, 65 players have already been retired from the field. That's eight full tables that have been broken out of the starting 40. Expect the pace to slow down significantly by the time we reach the first break.

Benson Gets Better of Antonius

One of the more interesting tables here today is the one featuring Gary Benson and Patrik Antonius. They were recently involved in a small clash that went the way of Benson.

Benson fired 2,200 on the {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}{4-Hearts} flop and Antonius made the call. The turn was the {2-Diamonds} and Benson fired another 7,000. Antonius made the call once again in position on the button. The river was the {Q-Diamonds} and Benson fired a third barrel worth 18,000, with Antonius giving it up.

Benson is up to nearly 80,000 with Antonius still hovering around 140,000. Expect more fireworks from these guys today!
