Mariakis' Adventurous Play Doesn't Pay
Michael Mariakas liked his four door card enough to complete the bring-in. David Morton, showing a nine, was the only caller. Both players caught a brick on fourth street, Mariakas with a king to Morton's queen. Morton bet and was called.
On fifth street, Morton caught a six to Mariakas' four. Morton bet, probably expecting a fold. Surprisingly, Mariakas called. All the money went in on sixth street, where Mariakas caught a nine and checked to Morton's queen. By the time the raising was done, Mariakas showed 2-10 / 4-K-4-9 for a king-ten against Morton's A-2 / 9-Q-6-Q for queen-nine. Each player improved on the river, but Morton's nine-six was best. He's now at 40,000, while Mariakas has fallen to 14,000.
