This Round to Arce

Casey Kastle and Neil Arce are each trying to position themselves to be in good shape for the start of Day 2 play. They tangled in a recent pot, with Arce getting the best of it. Five limpers took a flop of {9-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {2-Spades}. Kastle was first to act and bet 1,300 into the 4,000-chip pot. Arce raised him to 3,000, chasing everyone else out of the pot. Kastle made the call.

The turn was the {7-Hearts}. Castle checked to Arce, who counted down his stack of 17,000 chips before betting 5,000. Castle thought it over for a while, asked for a count behind, and then mucked his hand.

Roller Coaster for Sombero

It's been a few hands of excitement for Wally Sombero, although in the end his stack didn't change much. First, Sombero lost a big chunk when he ran his {Q-Hearts} {Q-Spades} into Didier Cicurel's {A-Clubs} {A-Spades} on a flop of {2-Spades} {8-Diamonds} {J-Clubs}. The board blanked out, dropping Sombero to 10,000 chips. A few hands later he got many of them back. He was all in on a board of {A-Hearts} {K-Clubs} {8-Hearts} with a small flush draw, {6-Hearts} {5-Hearts}. Young Sok Shun turned over {A-Diamonds} {J-Hearts} for top pair, then watched in disgust as the board came running sixes, {6-Diamonds} {6-Spades}, to give a pumped-up Sombero the pot.

Sombero now has 22,000 chips.

Talk of the Tables

David Welch
David Welch
Table three is by far the chattiest of all of the tables left in the tournament. Eddie Hearn is whooping and hollering on every pot he wins, and David Welch gives running commentary on his hands as they're in action.

Welch recently played a four-way pot with Hyoung Jin Nam and two other players. All checked the {A-Hearts} {A-Clubs} {7-Clubs} to Welch on the button. "Check," he said. "And hurry up. I might change my mind and bluff at it." The turn was the {2-Spades}. Hyoung Jin Nam bet 1,600, folding the two players in between him and Welch. Welch raised to 3,500 and Nam quickly called.

"I need a queen, a ten or a club," said Welch before the dealer burned and turned the {K-Hearts}. "Nope, no good," he said. He waved his hand and checked behind after Nam checked. "Your seven's good. Show your seven."

"Deuce," said Nam. It was good.

"Did you have clubs?" Welch asked, showing {Q-Clubs} {10-Clubs}. Nam showed {2-Clubs} {5-Clubs}. "Ah, too bad. If a club comes, it's goodbye, good night for you!"

"Say where?"

In between hands at Table 1, Wally Sombero is learning something new about the world. One of his opponents is Didier Cicurel, who hails from the tiny island nation of Seychelles. Never heard of Seychelles? Neither had Sombero. His curiosity piqued, he began asking Cicurel all manner of questions about Seychelles, including history (British and French colonial rule); population (approximately 90,000); industry (fishing); and climate (tropical, located in the Indian Ocean near the Equator).

Who says poker can't be educational?

Carlsson Surrenders

Robert Carlsson showed strength. Sitting in the big blind, he confidently raised Derek Hernandez from 1,600 to 3,100 preflop, then led out for 4,000 almost before the {6-Hearts} {Q-Clubs} {6-Diamonds} flop had been spread out by the dealer. Hernandez cautiously called, then bet 6,000 on the {9-Diamonds} turn when Carlsson checked. Carlsson must not have been to strong after all; he folded after roughly fifteen seconds of thought.

David Pained to Fold

What started out as a fairly routine pot between Vicente Pena and Tricia David became quite a drama on the turn. Pena and David took a heads-up raised flop of {A-Clubs} {K-Clubs} {2-Diamonds}. David checked and then called a bet of 2,500 from Pena.

The turn was a blank, the {6-Spades}. David checked again, then reacted in total shock when Pena moved all in for more than 23,000. She went into the tank for a solid four minutes, sighing in tortured indecision and pounding the table in frustration a few times as she tried to puzzle out what she should do. Finally, with the cameras rolling to record every last second of the action, David quietly surrendered her hand.

"King-deuce?" Pena asked. David smiled and shook her head no.
