Nine players will return to the SKYCITY Auckland Casino today.
One will emerge as the APPT Auckland champion.
The player arguable in the best position to go all the way is Brisbane’ Australia’s Minh Nguyen. He’s widely regarded as one of the finest poker talents in the region and with a monster chip lead, he’s going to be hard to beat.
There are eight players, however, who will be looking to stop Nguyen.
The player with the second largest stack, Sam Williams, has proven himself a formidable opponent, while prominent players like Aussies Dean Blatt, Michael Guzzardi and Jesse “On The Mac” McKenzie, along with Kiwi Thomas Ward are also still alive and kicking.
Here is how the final nine stack up:
Seat | Player | Chips |
---|---|---|
1 | Sam Williams | 633,000 |
2 | Ben Rendall | 545,000 |
3 | Michael Guzzardi | 296,000 |
4 | Dean Blatt | 142,000 |
5 | Thomas Ward | 404,000 |
6 | Jesse McKenzie | 477,500 |
7 | Stephen Thompson | 32,500 |
8 | William Rogers | 238,000 |
9 | Minh Nguyen | 1,605,500 |
You can learn more about each player in the live reporting blog below. It’s there that you will find full biographies. One of those nine players will eventually take home the APPT Auckland title and the NZ$132,000 top prize.
The cards are in the air from 12:15 p.m. local time today. Blinds kick off at 4,000/8,000.
Don’t miss it!
Sam Williams is a 27-year old Philosophy Student who has been playing poker for almost ten years. He got started in the game during his high school days but credits Paul Hockin and Carl Knox as his biggest poker influences.
Williams has a previous cash result in the ANZPT Queenstown Main Event, but his biggest result came online when he won a $55 rebuy event for $20,000.
Away from poker, Williams enjoys rock climbing, so clearly he's a man who enjoys a challenge. He'll enter the final table second in chips but has a mountain to climb to catch runaway chip leader Minh Nguyen.

Michael Guzzardi is a 30-year old from Melbourne and one of the country's finest poker talents, amassing an impressive resume in live and online tournaments over several years. His largest live score came in 2012 when he finished 3rd in the ANZPT Melbourne for $112,000. Guzzardi also plays cash games and can usually be found grinding Pot Limit Omaha.

After several near misses over the years, Guzzardi will be hoping this will be the major title that has so far eluded him.

26 year-old Dean Blatt has already had a huge year and has continued his fine form by making the final table of APPT Auckland. Blatt has posted more than $300,000 in results in 2014 alone, with his biggest score coming when he finished runner-up at ANZPT Perth for $77,710.
A finish of third or better in this event will see Blatt take second place in the ANZ Player of the Year award for 2014.
Blatt says that "meeting WSOP bracelet winner Rory Young" is the biggest highlight of his career and he also credits Young with being his biggest influence in the game.
To be more specific, Blatt says that Rory Young taught him how to play 6-2 offsuit from under the gun. Blatt has the second shortest stack at the final table, so he might need to use some of those lessons to win this one.
Outside of poker, Blatt simply says that he refreshes Twitter to see if Rory Young has tweeted.

Ward says that the highlight of his poker career was the opportunity to play in the 2014 World Series of Poker Main Event where he made a deep run before cashing in 313th place for $33,734 in prize money.

Stephen Thompson is an Operations Manager from Rotorua with five years of experience in poker after some friends started him in the game.
Those friends have been on the rail cheering him on over the last few days and he'll need their support as he enters the final table extremely short stacked. Regardless of what happens from here, this will be Thompson's best tournament result.
Away from poker, Thompson enjoys the unique pastime of pig hunting.
