Eric Persson is an American poker player and cash game player who burst onto the high-stakes cash game scene in 2021. The co-founder and CEO of Maverick Gaming, Persson oversees hotel and gaming operations – including 22 cardrooms – in Washington, Nevada, and Colorado. He married his wife, Ann, in 2007 and has four children.
Born in 1975, Persson grew up in Hoquiam, Washington, and attended the University of Nevada in Las Vegas where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, Criminal Justice, Psychology, and Communications. He then received his Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center in 2001.
He rose to prominence playing on Live At the Bike, and has gone on to participate in cash games on Hustler Casino Live, High Stakes Poker, No Gamble, No Future and the PokerGO Tour Heads-Up Showdown.
Persson made a name for himself thanks to his sharp tongue, quick wit, and fearlessness. He’s clashed numerous times with Phil Hellmuth, and even took on Daniel Negreanu on High Stakes Duel, ultimately losing in the first round.
Having learned poker when he was just 18 years old, Persson has been a cash game player for more than 30 years; in fact, it’s rumored he helped put himself through school with poker winnings. While he doesn’t play tournaments, he has won and lost millions playing live-streamed and televised cash game poker. That included losing the largest-ever televised pot, nearly $2 million, to Patrik Antonius.
While Persson has dropped seven figures on numerous occasions, he hasn’t been shy in stating that his televised poker exploits are a way of marketing his Maverick Gaming business.
In the gaming industry, Persson worked as Director of Table Games at the Prairie Band Casino & Resort from 2001-03 and a few years later became the Vice President of Slot Marketing & Operations at Las Vegas Sands Corporation. In 2017, he jumped over to Aruze Gaming as General Manager before becoming President and COO. It was around that same time he founded Maverick Gaming, which he named after his son.
Persson, whose net worth is estimated at between $40-$50 million, shows no sign of slowing down in the poker world, and if there’s a seat open in a high-stakes cash game, you can count on him taking it!
