Boris Angelov’s poker journey began online, where he was influenced by talented Bulgarian players, including his close friend Alex Kulev. Post-pandemic, he transitioned to live tournaments, marking his debut on the European Poker Tour (EPT) circuit in March 2022 at the EPT Prague Main Event, where he finished 59th.

Since then, he hasn’t missed an EPT event, demonstrating his commitment and passion for the game. At the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event this month, he earned his 20th bracelet event cash, and now he has a shot to win $10 million and become a world champion.

The Bulgarian poker player had just over $900,000 in live tournament cashes, according to The Hendon Mob. His largest prior score went for $663,565 when he finished second to Derk van Luijk in the EPT Monte Carlo Main Event just a few weeks before the 2024 WSOP began.

Now with the Main Event title in his sights, he's looking forward to representing Bulgaria, cheered on by his rail at the final table.

"They've been amazing," he said. "They push me and keep me going. I just feel like I can't go out when they're behind.

"I think [winning the Main Event] will be amazing for poker in Bulgaria. At least I hope so."

Angelov entered the $10,000 buy-in world championship event on Day 1c, the third of four opening flights. He'd finish the session with 52,500, below the 60,000-chip starting stack, and well below the average stack among the 1,906 survivors from the day.

The poker player would find some better luck on Day 2 when he quadrupled his stack over 10 hours of play to a point where he'd advance to Day 3 with an average stack. On the third day of play, he continued to survive, advance, and increase his stack, albeit only to 349,000. But he was doing what it takes to put himself in a position for a deep run.

When the bubble approached early on Day 4, he had plenty of chips and didn't have to sweat out the bubble. He would go on to have his first heater session of the tournament and bagged 2,380,000 chips, good for 59th out of 464 remaining players.

On Day 5, as the pay jumps were just starting to get big, he'd double his stack, once again surviving and advancing with more chips than he began the day. But Day 6 was only about survival for him as his stack would take a slight drop to 4,475,000, and he was one of the smallest stacks going into the final two pre-final table days.

Then, on Day 7, he would once again increase his stack, but was in a tough position, just 17th out of 18 remaining players. On Day 8, down to the final two tables, he'd go on a heater at an opportune time. Angelov will enter the final table with 52,900,000 chips, good for sixth out of nine players.

"Today's been, I'd say, a bit above expectation. Crazy stuff. I started really just getting good some hands and ran like God."
