Ontario-based poker players will soon have access to a new fully-regulated online poker room as the World Series of Poker (WSOP) and GGPoker Network announced on Thursday that they will launch WSOP.CA this spring, subject to “the successful execution of an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario.”

The online poker room, which will use GGPoker software, is scheduled to open for Ontario-based poker players in early April, will offer players “access to exclusive WSOP tournaments and satellites, all running on its award-winning, next-generation software,” according to a news release.

WSOP.CA will also provide “a range of launch promotions,” as well as automatic enrollment in the Caesars Rewards loyalty program, which includes hotel, food, entertainment and gaming opportunities at Caesars properties across North America.

Negreanu on Board

“As a proud Ontario native, I’m thrilled that poker’s two greatest brands have come together to launch WSOP.CA and offer the Ontario poker community the perfect place to play online,” GGPoker Global Ambassador Daniel Negreanu said in the news release. “You’ll be seeing exclusive WSOP rewards and tournaments, running on GGPoker’s amazing app - what’s not to love about that?”

WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart said the partnership with GGPoker “combines the best poker brand with the top poker software,” adding that “we’re thrilled to launch this online poker room for Ontario players.”

“We look forward to seeing Ontarians qualify for the live WSOP in Las Vegas this summer and challenge native son Daniel Negreanu for a gold bracelet,” the WSOP director said.

Existing GGPoker players based in Ontario can transfer their accounts to WSOP.CA once the poker room launches, according to the news release. Players can do so by logging into their GGPoker account, consenting to an automatic account transfer and downloading a software update.

Players who transfer their accounts will have access to the same launch promotions as players creating brand new accounts. Players can also expect exclusive Main Event packages and on-the-ground promotions in Toronto, as well as promotions with GGPoker ambassadors.

What's Next?

While GGPoker has had a presence at the physical World Series of Poker (WSOP) for several years and has hosted online bracelet events, the venture marks the first market the operator will actually take over WSOP online operations. It's a move that could very well be a precursor for what's to come in the United States and perhaps even worldwide.

While Negreanu will serve as a WSOP ambassador of sorts for the first time, it begs the question if other WSOP luminaries might have an opportunity to represent the brand, perhaps someone like 16-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth.

Finally, while official details are yet to be finalized, a live WSOP Circuit event is slated to take place in Windsor, Ontario in either August or September with WSOP.CA feeding in players via the virtual felt.

Eligible iGames conducted and managed by iGO are only available to those physically present in the Province of Ontario. WSOP.CA operates pursuant to an agreement with iGaming Ontario.
