Simon "C. Darwin2" Mattsson

Sweden’s Simon “C. Darwin2” Mattsson is one of the great online poker tournament players of all-time. He’s feared and respected in equal measure. It’s difficult to be thought of any higher when you reach Mattsson’s level, but he may have made that happen with his performances at PokerStars on Sunday 15 March.

The $1,050 Daily Warm-Up at PokerStars saw 219 players compete for a share of the $219,000 prize pool, of which more than $42,000 was reserved for the champion.

That champion was none other than Simon “C. Darwin2” Mattsson who emerged victoriously to claim the $42,738 top prize. Mattsson defeated the Netherlands’ “Pimmss” heads-up on his way to victory, resigning the Dutchman to a $32,471 consolation prize.

Stars from all over the world were at the final table. Simon “IgorKarkarof” Pedersen was the first superstar to bust. “WATnlos” and Thomas “WushuTM” Muehloecker were the next to fall. Norway’s “fityfmi” busted in fifth for $14,242 before “bencb789” saw his tournament end in a fourth-place finish worth $18,745.

The penultimate bustout was that of Jerry “Perrymejsen” Odeen who banked $24,671 for his third-place exit.

The final table of the $2,100 Sunday High Roller was just as scary as the $1,050 Daily Warm-Up, yet Mattsson still excelled.

Tuen “tinnoemulder” Mulder and “Radioromashka” were the first casualties of the final table. Austria-based German star Ole “wizowizo” Schemion’s tournament ended in a seventh-place finish for $9,467. This was the last prize not to weigh in at five-figures.

South Korea’s “leeeee7” crashed out in sixth-place for $12,561 before Hungary’s number one tournament player Andras “probirs” Nemeth busted and collected $16,356.

The United Kingdom's sole representative at the final table, Luke “Bit2Easy” Reeves bit the dust in fourth before “bencb789” collected $27,728 after falling in third.

Heads-up pitted Mattsson against fellow countryman Anton “anteen” Bertilsson. Bertilsson came out on top, but not before the pair struck a deal that saw Mattsson scoop $38,192. The champion netted $44,920 as part of that deal.

The $300K Gtd GG Masters smashed its guarantee this week with 2,260 players creating a $311,880 prize pool.

Mexico’s “oldzet” came out on top and collected the $46,252 top prize plus enough Player of the Year points to climb into fourth-place. The Mexican beat “OtxarkoagabrO” of Malta heads-up for the title, the Malta-based pro reeling in $32,968.

Perhaps the most important finish in this tournament was fourth-place, which went to Ricardo “M@cacoCidadao” Nascimento. The Brazilian padded his bankroll with $11,941 but, you may recall, he won this tournament a few weeks ago. The points he got his hands on for this latest deep run fired him to the top of the leaderboard by more than 250 points.

He’s now in pole position to secure the $500,000 GG sponsorship package, although there’s still more than eight months to go!

Heads-up deals are quite common in poker tournaments, but five-handed deals very rare. The latter happened in the $250 buy-in Phased High Rollers event at GGPoker on March 15.

Brazilian “HarryPorra” is credited with finishing in fifth-place for $26,873 with “Jaszczur” of Poland turning their $150 into $28,223. Next to bust was Panama’s “PositiveMind7”, a finish worth $26,809.

This set up a one-on-one battle between “TheShaft” of Costa Rica and “TheFishMonger” of the UK. A victory for the Brit was assured when they sent their opponent to the rail in second-place. The runner-up banked $36,211 with the champion receiving a haul worth $30,503.
