The 2018 WSOP Sydney Circuit event is well and truly underway here in Australia’s premier poker destination, Star Poker on the world-renowned Sydney Harbour. We have already seen some amazing stories unfold during the event with records being smashed thanks to an unprecedented number of players taking part in this year’s series.
Short Deck Goes to Sydney
One game that has been getting a lot of attention from players here at Star Poker is Event #13, the $800+$80 Short Deck Championship. Much like the yo-yo, Tamagotchi and Pokemon Go before it, Short Deck poker is the new fad which is taking the world by storm.
Not sure what Short Deck poker is? That’s fine - nobody did until about a year ago. Basically, it is just like regular Texas Hold’em but there are no cards lower than a six in the deck. That’s it! Pretty simple, right?
Short Deck Poker - Some Basics of the Game
Short Deck Poker is both simple and brilliant. Brilliant because without those pesky twos, threes, fours and fives in the deck, players have more ability to make a range of hands including pairs and sets. Better hands mean more action and that’s what Short Deck poker is - an awesome amount of non-stop poker action!
The only other thing to keep in mind is that the ranking of hands changes slightly. Not too much changes at the top. A Royal Flush is still as good as it gets, closely followed by a straight flush and then four of a kind. After that though, things start to flip around.
The next best hand is not actually a full house, like in standard poker variants but rather a flush. When you think about the fact that you are more likely to make a pair or three of a kind, then this seems quite reasonable. Speaking of three of a kind, that comes next and is actually ranked higher than a straight. The removal of the lower cards makes a straight much more obtainable!
After that, it is all fairly self-explanatory with two pair followed by one pair. If you don’t have any pair then you better hope you are good at bluffing as your opponent will almost certainly have a better hand than you!
WSOP Circuit Sydney Short Deck Event Details
The 2018 WSOP Sydney Short Deck Championship takes place at 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, December 15 so make sure you are at The Star Sydney. It will certainly be the place to be to either take part in the action or to follow along and watch the chips fly as there will certainly be fireworks galore. It's a re-entry event and players will start with 25,000 chips with blinds increasing every 30 minutes.
