Phil Siddell Wins the Sydney Championships Pot Limit Omaha (A$19,605)
Phil Siddell won his first major poker tournament after shipping the Sydney Championships Event #14: A$550 Pot Limit Omaha for A$19,605 ($14,484) at the Star Poker Room.
A total 140 runners stepped up to the plate to see who would be the best in the four card variant of the game and take down the title of 2018 Sydney Championships Omaha Champion.
As one would expect, the tournament was filled with fun and frivolity as the nature of pot-limit Omaha saw loads of chips flying into the middle. According to the Star Poker Live Reporting Team, cheers could be heard all around the Star Poker Room as players went all in early and hoped that the right card would hit by the river.
Whilst everyone had a great time, it was the prize money they were after. A total of 15 players were paid a minimum of A$1,181 ($873) with the real chunky payouts being reserved for the final table.
Michael Mayer is a well known Sydney pro who was unlucky to miss out on that final table, finishing in tenth place; the final table bubble. His absence meant that players from all over Australia sat down on the final table and made it likely that the Sydney Championships title would not be staying in Sydney, a theme that has become all too common so far in this Sydney Championships series.
Melbourne's Yu Chen, who was fresh from taking out the Mixed Game title earlier in the Sydney Championships, was a favorite for the title. However, a few costly moves early on the final table saw her bow out in eighth place.
Andy Miller has been a prominent fixture of final tables right around Australia of late. The Omaha final table marked his fifth final table in the past year. His run for a big title was cut short and he was ousted in fifth place.
That was one place above Sunshine Coast pro, Josh McCully. He had a fairly disappointing Sydney Championships by his high standards and was hoping for a deep run in this event, his sixth-place finish was close but not close enough.
Tae Woo Park was the last of the big Sydney hopes. He was playing some great poker fresh off the back of his fifteenth place finish in the Opening Event, but in the end, he would finish in fourth leaving Brisbane's Siddell, Melbourne's Adrian Rarung, and Perth's Htet Zin to battle three-handed for the title.
Siddell had the most experience of the three and it showed as he masterfully worked his way through the hands and took out both of the remaining players winning himself the title, the trophy, and A$19,605 in first place prize money.
