Schedule Released for Big One for One Drop and 35 Sign Up
Guy Laliberté's ambitious, recreational player-only Monte Carlo One Drop Extravaganza gets underway in a couple of weeks and 35 players have confirmed their attendance in poker's most expensive buy in event at €1,000,000.
"The Monte Carlo One Drop Extravaganza is fast approaching and with 35 recreational players already confirmed to play and many reentries predicted, the Big One is in real good shape," Laliberté said in a press release from World Series of Poker. "I want to remind players that there are still seven other tournaments and cash games, including a euro cash game, to be played during the week at what promises to be the biggest charitable poker event ever held with proceeds going to One Drop."
No participants were named in the press release.
The Main Event begins Friday, Oct. 14. Other notable events on the schedule include a €50,000 heads up tournament and a €100,000 tournament. There are also a number of satellites. Plus, cash games are promised with buy-ins from €2,500 to €1 million. Structures for the events are available here.
One Drop is a charity founded by Laliberté whose goal is providing safe water to communities in need. Two previous $1 million One Drop events benefiting the charity were held on American soil during the 2012 and 2014 WSOPs, but the event was absent from this year's schedule. Laliberté professed a need to radically alter the event due to the declining participation of amateur players. The 2012 edition, won by Antonio Esfandiari, drew 48 players; the 2014 tournament, won by Daniel Colman, drew just 42.
"The message I got was these recreational players, businessmen and philanthropists felt like they physically did not stand a chance," Laliberté told PokerNews in July. "They wanted to play for the money and the fun of it, but they would rather stake a pro than risk playing themselves against a field of professionals."
