Five Heads-Up GPL Matches Worth Watching from The Season's First Half

2 min read

The Global Poker League has gotten through the first half of its ambitious, inaugural season.

Storylines have started to emerge, with the Montreal Nationals and Moscow Wolverines racing out to the top of their respective conferences while the Las Vegas Moneymakers and Berlin Bears languish in the basements. A mix of established names like Olivier Busquet and Martin Jacobson and less well-known faces like Scott Ball and Jason Lavallee have starred as the top scorers in the league.

With all that in mind as the GPL takes a break for a few weeks before the stretch run, here's a look at some of the top heads-up matches of the first half of the season.

Match 6 — Dan Cates vs. Bertrand Grospellier

Dan "Jungleman" Cates and Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier faced off in Week 1 in what proved to be a fun affair that included a number of coolers and a sick three-outer to decide the opening round of the best-of-three.

Match 10 — Tom Marchese vs. Anthony Zinno

Just a day after Jungleman and ElkY went to war, it was two of the hottest names in live poker over the past few years, Tom Marchese and Anthony Zinno, going at it. The first round ended in especially gross fashion for one of the two.

Match 81 — Aaron Paul vs. Fabrice Soulier

The highly anticipated GPL debut of actor Aaron Paul came in The Cube against Frenchman Fabrice Soulier. How would the Hollywood star's skills match up to those of the pro?

Match 85 — Jeff Gross vs. Felipe Mojave

Jeff Gross and Felipe Mojave played a match saw one player run a lot better than the other. Still, they kept things light by showing how The Cube could be used to play more than one game at a time.

Match 99 — Bryn Kenney vs. Anatoly Filatov

Team captains Bryn Kenney and Anatoly Filatov played a fast-paced, swingy match late in the summer that saw plenty of good action and some tough decisions late.
