James Dempsey Wins Grand Prix Poker Tour Brighton
James “Flushy” Demspey topped a field of more than 2,100 entrants to get his hands on the $40,000 first place prize in the partypoker Grand Prix Poker Tour Brighton Main Event.
The 224 surviving players from the multiple online and live Day 1s combined on the afternoon of July 24, each having locked up $330 for their initial $109 investment. Several players were in possession of a Golden Chip, a promotional item awarding its holder an addition $50,000 cash if they won the Main Event.
After four hours of action, those 224 Day 2 players were reduced to the final table of nine, with Michael Boyd falling in 10th place.

Jaraslaw Szwarc went into the final table as the shortest stack stack, and was ultimately the first casualty of the final table.
Szwarc committed his chips with ace-ten and Dempsey called with the dominating ace-jack of spades. Neither player improved by the river, and Dempsey’s jack-kicker came into play, busting Szwarc.
Dempsey then sent another two players to the rail. First, Demspey was lying in wait with red aces when Jamie Robinson pushed all-in into him with queen-jack, then Dempsey’s ace-seven of held against Paul Nugent’s seven-five of diamonds.
Dempsey took a break from his one-man demolition of the field and witnessed James Alsop’s queens prevail against Peter Burgon’s ace-queen to leave only five players in contention for the title.
Those five became four with the elimination of Ken Priestnall, who looked set for a double-up when his black jacks faced off against Tom Simm’s ace-seven of hearts, but an ace on the turn ended Priestnall’s tournament hopes.
Alsop was the next to fall, his ace-queen unable to get there against the pocket tens of Webber, before Webber himself bust after Dempsey set him all-in with what turned out to be eight-five of clubs, and Webber called with pocket eights. Webber’s snowmen melted when Dempsey flopped trip fives, and heads-up was set.
Simm trailed Dempsey by 17.6 million to 24 million chips at the start of the one-on-one battle. Simm pulled level in the early stages, but it was Dempsey who won the all-important final hand.
A raising war broke out on a queen-jack-deuce flop with two diamonds, a war that resulted in Simm being all-in and at risk of elimination. Simm was in possession of an aforementioned Golden Chip so winning this hand would all but guarantee him a $90,000 payday.
However, his eight-seven of diamonds was drawing thin against Dempsey’s ten-nine of diamonds. A non-diamond heart on the turn failed to alter the course of the hand, and when a black six completed the board, Simm was eliminated, and Dempsey won yet another live title.
