Alex Komaromi Wins Uruguay's First Bracelet in WSOP Europe 8-Game
Alex Komaromi became the first player from Uruguay to win a World Series of Poker bracelet Thursday, taking down Event #5: €2,200 8-Game Mixed Event at the WSOP Europe in Berlin, Germany.
Komaromi earned €65,740 and the most coveted prize in poker for his efforts, defeating a stacked final table including two-time WSOP bracelet winner and now five-time runner-up Scott Clements heads-up.
"I'm very excited," he told PokerNews. "It feels like a dream to me."
The final table of six began Wednesday with German mixed-game specialist Jens Lakemeier going from the chip lead to out following a bad run of cards.
American Shaun Deeb then moved up to second place in the 2015 WSOP GPI Player of the Year race posting a fifth-place finish. 2010 WSOP Main Event champ Jonathan Duhamel had earned the chip lead at the final two tables, but fell fourth before the final three decided to bag up and finish out the final Thursday.
Komaromi had worked his way into the chip lead and it wasn't long before Noah Bronstein ran top pair into his set of deuces playing no-limit hold'em to go broke third.
Clements, who also finished second in the A$5,000 8-Game Mixed Event at the World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific in Melbourne, Australia, last year, simply didn't have the stack to stop Komaromi from winning Uruguay's first bracelet.
"Over the last year I decided to play more often and study more and it's getting results," said Komaromi, who spent the 2015 WSOP grinding mixed cash games in Las Vegas, adding that next year he will play more tournaments.
"It was a very tough field with a lot of very good players who were more experienced than me, but I was lucky enough to win," he said. "I think I ran pretty good in the right moments, when there were eight to ten players left they were all elite players. It was hard to take advantage of most of the spots. But I tried my best and I think I did good and I ran good.
"It really means a lot. It's like a dream to me. I started watching poker on TV and the World Series, it seemed so far away. Now that I have achieved it, it's great. I am very happy."
