UK & Ireland PokerNews Roundup: partypoker Grand Prix Kicks Off
The working week is all but over — unless you work in the poker industry that is — and that means only one thing, it is time for our UK & Ireland PokerNews Roundup.
For those of you who have read these before, welcome back, for those of you who are new to them, you are about to read our quick recap of the past week or so's biggest and most popular poker stories from our UK & Ireland PokerNews site. One of the most eagerly anticipated live poker tournaments of the past few years is now running simultaneously at both partypoker and Dusk Till Dawn. The partypoker Grand Prix Million only costs $120 to buy into, yet the guaranteed prize pool weighs in at a remarkable $1 million.
Online Day 1s, of which there are several, are running every day at partypoker until May 24 and the live Day 1s kicked off on May 15 and too run through to May 24.
While thousands of grinders compete in the Grand Prix Million, the management teams from the MPN Poker Tour and Amateur Poker Association & Tour (APAT) are busy planning their new ventures.
Earlier this week, the MPN Poker Tour continued the recent trend of hosting a major live event in Ireland by announcing it will be heading to Dublin in September. While it is still in its infancy, the MPN Poker Tour is quickly establishing a reputation for being one of the most exciting and innovative poker tours on the circuit and its events are now thought of as "must-play" tournaments.
APAT did more than unveil a new stop on its tour, it published details of a full season. Now in its ninth season, the APAT is one of the best-run and fun tours in the world of poker. Aimed at recreational players, it allows players to sample what life's like in a major tournament without the need to break the bank to play in them. Moving into the world of online poker now and the week got off to a fantastic start for British players thanks in part to the PokerStars Spring Championship Of Online Poker (SCOOP) being kind to them. One player in particular, Jack McDermott, is delighted with how things have gone so far, as would you be had you walked away with more than $191,000 during the opening few events.
Another player who sampled the sweet taste of success at PokerStars this weekend was the United Kingdom's Team pro representative, Jake Cody. The live poker Triple Crown winner walked away with the Sunday Supersonic title and the $58,748.35 first place prize in less than two hour of play — nice work if you can get it!
Rounding out the round-up are a trio of stories, one online poker related, the other from the world of live poker and some gambling industry news.
Former European Poker Tour (EPT) Barcelona champion Tom Middleton returned to the top 20 of the PocketFives.com UK Online Poker Rankings this week following a string of impressive results, although by far the most impressive result of the week was, without a doubt, the outright victory in the EPT Grand Final €25,000 High Roller by Charlie Carrel, a win that netted the 21-year old a massive €1,114,000.
Lastly, gambling giant Ladbrokes are now in the hunt for a new chairman after long-serving Peter Erskine decided to step down from his role as the company attempts to turn is flagging fortunes around.
