2014 World Series of Poker Day 20: Calvin Anderson Snares Stud Hi/Low; Pierre Milan Wins One for France
While the World Cup played on and the NBA Finals and U.S. Open reached their conclusions, it was a busy Sunday as well at the 2014 World Series of Poker with six different events in action and two bracelets won.
As France won its opening match in Brazil, Pierre Milan won the country its first WSOP bracelet this summer in Event #29: $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em. Meanwhile online star Calvin Anderson (pictured at right) grabbed his first ever WSOP title, breaking through to win Event #30: $1,500 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low.
Here’s a rundown of both players’ triumphs and what happened in each of the other four bracelet events at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino yesterday:
Event #29: $2,500 No-Limit Hold'em
Twenty players returned from a starting field of 1,165 to play yesterday’s third and final day of Event #29, and after another long day of poker Pierre Milan denied Justin Oliver his second WSOP bracelet after taking just three hands to defeat the latter once the pair began heads-up play.
Following the elimination of Season XI World Poker Tour Player of the Year Matt Salsberg in third place, Milan and Oliver were virtually even in chips with Oliver only slightly ahead. Then on the second hand between them they managed to get all Milan all in on the turn with the board showing K♠6♥3♦Q♥ and Oliver holding K♣J♥ for top pair. But Milan had two pair with his K♥6♠, and when the river brought the 9♦ Millan suddenly had Oliver down to about three big blinds.
Oliver was all in on the next hand with pocket sixes against Milan’s 10♦8♦, and when a ten came among the community cards it was all over. Milan had earned his first career WSOP bracelet and better than half-a-million-dollar first prize, while France had captured its first title as well at this summer’s WSOP.
Barry Hutter (who finished fifth) and Sam Cohen (who finished ninth) were among the tough challengers Milan had to overcome at the final table, with David Benefield (10th, $30,267), Chris Johnson (11th, $30,267), Rep Porter (18th, $19,718), and William Reynolds (19th, $16,220) among the group not quite making the final nine.

Event #30: $1,500 Seven-Card Stud Hi-Low
Over in Event #30, just 12 were left on Sunday from the tournament’s 588 starters, with Calvin Anderson, a.k.a. “cal42688,” starting the day second in chips behind Eric Kurtzman. Anderson was making his second final table of the summer after finishing eighth in the Event #20: $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship, continuing a hot 2014 that saw him just last month earn Spring Championship of Online Poker Player of the Series honors at PokerStars where he made seven final tables and won his fifth career SCOOP title.
The focus to start the day was also further down the leaderboard to see if Ted Forrest might win his second bracelet of the series and seventh of his career. But Forrest would fall just shy of the final table in ninth place ($12,121) following the eliminations of Matthew Kelly (12th, $9,501), David Brooker (11th, $9,501), and Robert Goldfarb (10th, $12,121).
Jimmy Fricke would last until seventh place, while Melissa Burr was short-stacked to begin the final eight but managed to make it all of the way to fifth. Joe Tehan had the lead early at the final table, but Anderson seized the advantage and continued to set the pace as Levon Torosyan fell in fourth then Kurtzman in third, with Anderson knocking out both.
Heads-up play began with Anderson enjoying the advantage with 1,890,000 to Tehan’s 756,000, and within a half-hour he’d have Tehan whittled all of the way down to less than a small bet. All in on third street on the final hand, Tehan would only be able to draw one pair and no low while Anderson drew two pair, and Anderson had won.

Event #31: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em
Day 2 of Event #31: $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em saw just 15 players survive from an original starting field of 1,631, with Matt Stout ending the night bagging the most chips of those who remain as the only player with more than 1 million. Brett Shaffer and Peter Gould are among the players also ending the night with above average stacks.
Those cashing during the later stages of play last night included Bart Hanson (45th, $8,455), Erik Cajelais (42nd, $8,455), Lauren Kling (37th, $8,455), Norbert Szecsi (31st, $10,106), Perry Friedman (28th, $10,106), Ruman Nanev (27th, $12,242), Jonas Lauck (24th, $12,242), Ray Qartomy (23rd, $12,242), Seth Berger (18th, $14,994), Jonathan Gray (17th, $14,994), and Alessandro Bardaro (16th, $14,994).

Event #32: $10,000 Six-Handed No-Limit Hold’em Championship
The second day of the three-day Event #32: $10,000 Six-Handed No-Limit Hold’em Championship also played out on Sunday with just 13 players making it through to today’s final day of play out of a big starting field of 264.
Max Silver currently leads a tough final group, having bagged 1,270,000 chips to put him ahead of Hiren Patel and 2009 WSOP Main Event champion Joe Cada at the top of the counts. The returning group also includes numerous bracelet holders, including Jeremy Ausmus, JC Tran, Scott Clements, George Danzer, Layne Flack, and Erick Lindgren.
Among the many notables cashing last night yet falling short of today’s final day of play were Matt Waxman (24th, $22,483), Nick Schulman (20th, $22,483), Jared Jaffee (19th, $22,483), Ben Volpe (18th, $28,414), Ashton Griffin (16th, $28,414), Igor Kurganov (15th, $28,414), and Brock Parker (14th, $28,414).

A couple of other events kicked off on Sunday, including Event #33: $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em which saw 1,688 players come out to create a total prize pool of $1,519,200.
Brazilian race car driver Gualter Salles sped out in front of everyone to end the night with the chip lead, with Brad Libson, Vinny Pahuja, Dutch Boyd, Jonas Wexler, Martin Finger, and Faraz Jaka also among those bagging big stacks at night’s end.
Just 115 players survived the first day of play, which meant the money bubble has already burst with Jason Koon (138th, $2,187), Amanda Baker (137th, $2,187), Robert Suer (126th, $2,187), Ariel Celestino (123rd, $2,187), and Kyle Cartwright (116th, $2,369) among the early cashers.

Finally, Event #34: $1,500 Seven-Card Stud got underway with 345 players entering to create a prize pool of $465,750. Two-time bracelet winner Steve Sung ended the first day of play with the chip lead, with the top of the counts populated with numerous notables including Bryan Campanello, Brian Hastings, John D’Agostino, Bryn Kenney, Steve Albini, Cyndy Violette, Marcel Luske, and Daniel Negreanu.
Just 60 players remain with only the top 40 making the money. Here’s how the top 10 looked overnight:
