Global Poker Index: Volpe Back in the Top 10, and Ivey Back Out

Each week, the Global Poker Index releases a list of the top 300 tournament poker players in the world using a formula that takes into account a player's results over six half-year periods. The GPI also ranks the top performers of the year over two six-month periods as calculated by the USA Today Global Poker Index point system.

2014 GPI Player of the Year

Marvin Rettenmaier, the runner-up in the 2012 GPI Player of the Year race, joins 2012 GPI POY winner Dan Smith in the top 10 of the 2014 race. The German finished second in a $1,100 buy-in side event at the L.A. Poker Classic, adding to his two cashes at the Aussie Millions and his two cashes at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. Rettenmaier has $216,932 in earnings in the first two months of the year.

American Jacob Schindler also joins the top 10 this week, moving up 16 spots to No. 6. Schindler won the PCA $25,000 High Roller, banking over $1 million, and finished fifth in a $5,000 buy-in side event at the LAPC.

Aussie Millions Main Event champion Ami Barer and Jeremy Nock fall out of the top 10 this week.

GPI 300 Top 10

Daniel Negreanu continues to lead the GPI 300, 2013 GPI POY Ole Schemion trails him at No. 2, and Rettenmaier remains at No. 3.

Philipp Gruissem and Mike McDonald leap-frogged Jason Mercier, Dan Smith, and Vanessa Selbst within the top 10, and a marquee player returned to the top of the ranks: Paul Volpe.

Volpe won the aforementioned $5,000 side event at the LAPC, earning $127,490, and now has three six-figure scores in the last 12 months. Just over 12 months ago Volpe reached back-to-back WPT final tables, pocketing a combined $1 million, but those scores are now in Period 3 and carry less weight.

Exiting the top 10 this week is Mike Watson, who fell eight places to No. 17.

Welcome to the GPI

Ty Reiman returns to the GPI 300 once again, coming in all the way up at No. 180. Reiman won a $1,600 bounty event at the LAPC for $22,230, and reached the same final table as Volpe and Schindler at Commerce, finishing fourth for $42,500.

WSOP bracelet winners Erick Lindgren and Josh Pollock also rejoin the top 300. Lindgren cashed in the Venetian DeepStack Main Event, and Pollock snuck into the money in the WSOP Circuit Las Vegas Main Event.

The seven players exiting the GPI 300 are Sergey Rybachenko, Aku Joentausta, Roberto Romanello, Thomas Butzhammer, Paul Nunes, John Racener, and Phil Ivey. Ivey had just returned to the GPI 300 last week.

Biggest Gains

After recently returning to the GPI 300, Kyle Bowker receives a huge bump this week, flying up 83 spots to No. 200. Bowker finished fifth in the LAPC Playboy $500,000 Guarantee, earning $94,810, and now has over $2.1 million in career live tournament earnings.

Ben Palmer, Scott Baumstein, and Mark Darner also made significant strides in the rankings. Palmer cashed in the WSOP Circuit Las Vegas Main Event, Baumstein finished third in a bounty event at LAPC, and Darner cashed in a circuit event in Florida.

Biggest Drops

Blake Bohn takes a substantial his this week, free-falling 107 places to No. 256. Bohn won the Chicago Poker Classic just over 12 months ago, earning $288,171, and that result is now in Zone 3.
