Global Poker Index: Negreanu Takes Lead in Player of the Year Race and GPI 300

Each week, the Global Poker Index releases a list of the top 300 tournament poker players in the world using a formula that takes a player's results over six half-year periods. The GPI also ranks the top performers of the year over two six-month periods as calculated by the USA Today Global Poker Index point system.

2013 GPI Player of the Year

Daniel Negreanu not only captured his sixth World Series of Poker bracelet and second WSOP Player of the Year award last week, he also took the lead in the GPI Player of the Year race. With his win in Event #8: €25,600 High Roller at the 2013 WSOP Europe, Kid Poker climbed up seven spots to take the lead away from Germany’s Ole Schemion. With only a few tournaments left on the calendar, and a 166-point lead on the field, Negreanu is a favorite to capture the title.

Joining the top 10 this week were Americans Ravi Raghavan and David Peters, and German Philipp Gruissem. Raghavan reached the final table of the WSOP Europe Main Event, finishing fifth for $237,892, Peters reached the High Roller final table, finishing fourth for $203,425, and Gruissem was also at the High Roller final table with Peters and Negreanu. He finished third for $337,915, but he also won the World Poker Tour Alpha8 stop in London for over $1.3 million.

GPI 300 Top 10

Negreanu’s success in Enghien-les-Bains not only earned him the top spot in the POY race, but he is now the No. 1 ranked player in the world. Gruissem and Peters, thanks to their aforementioned successes, joined the top 10 this week, alongside of Shannon Shorr.

Shorr had two deep runs at the WSOP Europe, finishing fifth in the €5,000 Mixed Max event and eighth in the Main Event. The American also cashed in the EPT London Main Event, and finished sixth in a side event at the same stop.

Welcome to the GPI

Young Adrian Mateos, winner of the WSOP Europe Main Event, rocketed all the way up to No. 132 with his big win. Mateos, 19, also won a Main Event on the Estrellas Poker Tour a few months ago in Madrid.

Fellow WSOP Europe Main Event final tablists Benny Spindler and Nicolau Villa-Lobos are also in the GPI 300, along with Ludovic Lacay and Andrey Konopelko, who reached final tables in preliminary events.

Exiting the GPI 300 this week are Mike Wattel, Jason Lavallee, Guy Goossens, James Anderson, Rasmus Agerskov Larsen, Heinz Kamutzki, and Sergio Castelluccio.

Biggest Gains

Frenchman Fabrice Soulier, who finished runner-up to Mateos in the WSOP Europe Main Event, rocketed 186 spots up the rankings to No. 100. Fellow final tablist Dominik Nitsche also received a big bump, moving up 58 spots to No. 53.

Also moving up more than a 100 spots in the GPI 300 this week is Sergio Aido. Aido finished 12th in the WSOP Europe Main Event and 72nd in the €1,000 re-entry event, and now has nearly a half a million dollars in earnings in 2013.

Biggest Drops

Ironically, the two players taking the biggest hits this week happen to be brothers. Mukul Pahuja fell 48 spots to No. 223, while his older brother Vinny Pahuja fell 55 spots to No. 279.
