2013 WSOP Europe Day 12: Negreanu Falls in Main Event; Mizzi Leads High Roller
The 2013 World Series of Poker Europe continued on Tuesday with Day 3 of the €10,450 Main Event and Day 1 of the €25,600 High Roller. With Daniel Negreanu’s elimination in 25th place of the Main Event, the field was down to three eight-handed tables. Leading the 24 survivors was Spain’s Adrian Mateos, who bagged 1,066,000 chips. Directly behind him was American pro Daniel Steinberg, who finished the day with 1,009,000 chips.

Mateos crossed the million-chip mark in Level 17 when he eliminated WSOP bracelet winner Scott Clements. According to WSOP.com, Clements was in good shape to double through the Spaniard with the A♦J♣ against Mateos A♣8♦, but the board brought two eights, and Clements hit the rail in 28th place.
Steinberg, who finished sixth in the 2010 WSOP Europe Main Event for £156,530, reached seven figures first, crippling Marc-Andre Ladouceur at the start of Level 17. Steinberg turned a straight, putting a big check-raise in on the turn. Ladouceuer, who finished 13th in the 2012 WSOP Main Event and 63rd in the 2011 WSOP Main Event, called with a lesser hand, and busted in 29th the next hand.
Joining Mateos on Day 4 will be WSOP bracelet winner Jeremy Ausmus, Benny Spindler, Ludovic Lacay, Shannon Shorr, Ariel Celestino, and Ravi Raghavan.
The day ended with Negreanu’s elimination in 25th place. Kid Poker moved all in with the K♣10♥ over an open from Serbian Ognjen Sekularac, who called with a dominating A♠K♦. Negreanu rivered a ten, but with a queen and jack on board, Sekularac made a Broadway straight.
Despite falling short of the final table, the five-time bracelet winner has now cashed in five of the seven WSOP Main Events that have been held outside of Las Vegas, making three final tables and winning the inaugural WSOP Asia-Pacific Main Event.

The bubble in the WSOP Europe Main Event burst after over an hour of hand-for-hand play, yet it nearly burst on just the second hand. Flavien Guenan was all in and at risk with pocket queens against the pocket kings of Spindler, and the Frenchman hit a set of queens on the flop. Roughly 60 minutes later, the unfortunate bubble boy was James Alexander, who was all in with the 9♠9♣ against Clements’ A♥J♦. Clements flopped a jack, and held as the turn and river both produced bricks.
Also busting in the money were [Removed:17], Todd Terry, Yann Dion, Marcin Wydrowski, 2011 November Niner Sam Holden, and Giacomo Fundaro.
Play will resume on Wednesday at noon local time, and conclude when the official final table of eight has been reached.
Event #8: €25,600 High Roller
The final bracelet event of the 2013 WSOP Europe began on Tuesday at 6 p.m., attracting 75 entrants. Registration will be open for another five levels on Day 2, and a few names are expected the join the action, including 13-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth.
Leading the approximate 62 survivors with 268,200 chips was Sorel Mizzi. The Canadian pro, who already has over $3.4 million in earnings in 2013, recorded a double knockout in Level 3.
According to WSOP.com, all of the money went in the middle preflop between Mizzi (A♥A♦), Martin Jacobson (K♠K♦), and a short-stacked Vasily Kurdin (K♣Q♣). Mizzi flopped a set of aces to extend his lead in the hand, but Kurdin was drawing to a club flush. The turn and river were both red jacks, and Jacobson and Kurdin reported to the rail.
Also finishing the day atop the counts were Scott Seiver (248,800), Antonio Esfandiari (209,000), November Niner Marc McLaughlin (188,200), Phil Ivey (182,800), and Jason Mercier (163,500).
Among the dozen or so players to bust was Season 9 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino European Poker Tour Grand Final Main Event winner Steve O’Dwyer. On the Irishman’s final hand he was all in and at risk with the K♦K♠ on a flop of 3♣8♥4♥. He was ahead of Steven Silverman’s Q♥Q♦, but both of those players trailed Finnish pro Joni Joukimainen’s 3♠3♥. The K♥ spiked on the turn, giving O’Dwyer the lead with a set of kings, but the A♥ completed the board to give Silverman and Joukimainen a flush. Silverman took the main pot with the queen of hearts in his hand, but the Finn was awarded the side pot and O’Dwyer hit the rail.
John Juanda, David Benefield, David “Devil Fish” Ulliott, and Jean-Noel Thorel were also eliminated on Day 1.
