Off the Felt is interviewing your favorite poker players to find out more about their lives — you've got it — off the felt. We recently sat down with Jordan Young to discuss his move to Canada, find out his football predictions, and more.
How did you get into playing poker?
I started playing with all my friends in high school when we were 15, before we could drive. We would just all go to someone’s house on Friday night and start playing at 11 p.m. and play until noon the next day. We would just play like $5 tournaments.
You recently moved to Toronto, Canada. What’s that like?
I like Toronto, it’s actually one of my favorite cities I’ve ever been in, but it just kind of sucks being away from everyone I know. I miss my dog, Doogan.
What’s the best thing about Canada?
You can play online poker. I’ve been here for three and a half weeks, I haven’t had time to do anything because I’ve been setting up everything for the house. I live with four other people, Nick Mitchell, Josh Bergman, Paul Volpe, and Sean Getzwiller. We all play poker all day, everyday.
What does your poker schedule look like for the next few months?
For the first month during WCOOP I wake up at 10 or 11 a.m. and play until midnight. I’m going to be here for the next five months just playing poker everyday.
What are you hobbies away from the table?
Not much, just hanging out with my friends. I golf a little bit. I guess I would shoot in the 80s. I haven’t played for a while.
Favorite place to play live poker?
I would have to say the Bellagio in the Fontana lounge but I heard they don’t have it anymore.
Can you name the main characters in Twilight?
One of them is Kristen, so yes. What is her name, Kristen Stewart right? I don’t know anyone else or who she plays.
What did you do before you started playing poker?
I used to play golf. I played four years in high school and I would play everyday. My mom would drop me off at the golf course when I was like 12, at 10 in the morning and pick me up at 10 at night when it got dark.
If you could go golfing with anyone who would it be?
My dad, my grandpa, and Tiger Woods — wait Tiger would be kind of boring. Phil Mickelson would be fun.
Any predictions for the NCAA Championship Game this year?
I think Oklahoma is going to be there and they will probably get blown out because that’s what they usually do. They usually are number one all year, get there, and get blown out. Hopefully Michigan State has a really good year.
Any hidden talents away from the table?
I have heaps of hidden talents. I mean I can’t name just one.
You and your friends make up a lot of “terms” when it comes to poker. What’s your favorite one?
Snerks. It just means I understood. So if someone told you something and you understood it, you would just say “snerks.”
Last movie you saw?
This is a toughie because I watch heaps of movies on demand. I guess the Hangover 2. It was pretty good.
What would you be doing it you weren’t playing poker?
I would have probably finished college and gotten my degree in business. I wanted to go into the hospitality industry and open up a sports bar.
