Tristran Coffin outlasted a field of 132 entries to win Event #3 of the Western New York Poker Challenge late Sunday night. Wearing a lucky Wisconsin Badgers sweatshirt the day after the men's basketball team made the Final Four, Coffin played his short stack to perfection for much of the day and eventually defeated Tom Scanlon heads-up for the title.
Scanlon and Marcy Jo Penkalski pocketed the biggest payouts after a four-handed deal at the final table, but Coffin still earned the trophy and $4,900 for his one day of work at the Seneca Poker Room in Niagara Falls, New York.
The top 15 finishers of Event #3 each locked up $565 after Sam Guercia was eliminated on the money bubble. He was followed out the door by Mike Shavensky, Deet V., and Brian Moss, before Randy Swackhamer was eliminated on the final table bubble when his flopped top pair came up second-best against Rio Mansour's set of sevens (which eventually became quads on the river).
At the final table, Adam Greenly exited in 10th place when he ran his 
into Scanlon's 
. He was followed out the door a short while later by Tom MacKinnon, who took a brutal beat with pocket kings against Scanlon's tens on a 
board.
A wild hand saw the eliminations of Greg Miller and Rio Mansour in seventh and sixth place, respectively.With the blinds at 10,000/20,000/2,000, Miller moved all in for 117,000 from under the gun, and Penkalski called directly behind. Action folded over to Mansour on the button, and he moved all in for 62,000 more. Action was still pending, but Mansour mistakenly exposed pocket aces. The blinds folded, and Penkalski claimed she didn't see Mansour's hand before calling the additional 62,000.

Incredibly, Penkalski drillled a set on the 
flop, and she faded a re-suckout when the

completed the board. Since Miller had less he earned seventh place money, and Mansour was the sixth-place finisher.
Josh Ross held the chip lead for much of the day, but his run came to a crashing halt at the final table. After Tristran Coffin opened, Ross moved all-in for 124,000. Coffin called immediately.

At that point the four remaining players agreed to the deal, leaving the Event #3 trophy to play for. Kyle Gay was happy to lock up his $4,900 after taking a tough beat to Penkalski, ending his run in fourth place. Nearly an hour later Penkalski followed Gay to the rail in third place.
Coffin had been quiet for most of the day but after eliminating Ross and Penkalski he made himself known during heads-up play. He entered the match with a slight lead and grinded Scanlon down to less than 15 big blinds when the final hand took place (see below).

Tom Scanlon opened his button to 90,000, and Tristran Coffin moved all in. Scanlon called off for 580,000 total, and the cards went on their backs.

Coffin was a big favorite to close it out, but Scanlon picked up some outs on the 
flop. Both players paired their ace on the turn, and Coffin sealed the victory when the 
peeled off on the river.

Marcy Jo Penkalski's fantastic run in this tournament has come to an end. She locked up more than $6,200 in the final table deal and was playing hard for the trophy, but she ran two pair into Tristran Coffin's turned flush with for all of her chips.
